My dock neighbor was surprised when I told him that I never use fuel stabilizer for my gas engines. How many of you use any type of fuel additive and which type?
Marc

Startron every other fueling and at storage. Used to use Stabil at winter storage. Never had a problem with either. Not scientific because i never stored without an additive.

I have always used Stabil for winterizing, but just this last season, I started to add every other fill up to prevent any problems with the ethanol gas.

Have done it both ways. Sometimes, I buy gas from my marina. It supposedly has ValvTec additive. Claims to prevent fuel issues.

I add about half of the recommended amount of SeaFoam to my fuel, pre winterization. . . sometimes.

There have been winters when I did nothing to the fuel.. Never had an issue in the spring.

I think in climates where it is necessary to winterize, that gas being "refrigerated" for a few months slows the separation.

But I think that, because I've never have had a fuel issue. My 70 GTO is seldom driven in the winter, the fuel in it during the last trip was at least 60 days old. Idle quality was fine, as was highway driving.

This and the discussion about weather to fill your fuel tanks in the fall comes up every so often. Many different opinions.

I have always added Stabil before winterizing. I normally add it prior to my last trip out before putting the boat away. As far as I am concerned it is just part of normal winterizing.

Regular dose of Stabil every tank full in season. Double dose for winter layup. Sam's usually has a very good price on it.

I use Startron, 3 years in my pontoon boat with 90hp oil injected Johnson OB and the last 4 years in an 89 Carver with twin 4.3L carb'd Mercs. I have never had a fuel related maintenance issue. I found the best price at Wally World.

2.5 ounces per gallon in season. 5.0 ounces per gallon of gas in winter. When Sam's has it, they normally charge about $17 for a package of tow 32 ounce bottles. One in each side during the summer. 2 bottles in each side for winter or if the tanks are less than full, what ever amount will bring the mix to approx 5.0 ounces per gallon.

I have not tried the marine formula yet. I am trying to find out what difference between warrants twice the price.

I only wish. However I don't want to experience the damage after phase seperation sets in.

What is phase separation and why haven't after all these years Chief or I had that issue ?

I would have to guess that neither of you has had an issue with moisture getting into your fuel. I had a really bad case of it when ethanol first came to my area. Since then I installed extra water separators and use StarTron on every fill-up. With only 72 gallons of tankage, it's not that much of an added expense for the insurance value.

Did somebody say they found StarTron at Wallyworld?

Kurt,
Found it in the 8oz bottles in the extensive Walmart Marine section, I normally pay $7.99 for a bottle as opposed to $11.99 at WM

Check the quantity in each bottle. I thought I was getting a great deal on some Spray Nine until I got it home and found it was 3/4 the content for more than 75% of the price elsewhere. Add to that dealing with the People of Walmart and I felt violated.

That ratio is way off Sta-bil's recommendation- typo? Sta-bil recommends one ounce per 2.5 gallons of gas. One 32-oz. bottle treats 80 gallons.
