Bought a new Garmin Chartplotter/Depth Sounder. I assumed all of the charts were already loaded but either I missed something huge in set up or they didn't. I paid 600 for the damn thing, I've never heard of having to buy the charts on top of that....

You should have base maps loaded; did you get a chip or have the chip loaded by your installer?

Charts are rarely included, just useless basemaps. It pays to read the fine print.

What model did you buy?

Garmin base maps are excellent and come loaded on all current units.

Raymarine base maps have a lot to be desired. Useless like Pacal says, Garmin's are excellent.

I agree! I had Garmin on my old boat and loved it. My new to me boat has Raymarine and I'm not a big fan. Not totally loving the Navionics card I bought to go in the MFD's either. I loved the Garmin G2 Vision I had for my old boat.
If the electronics on this boat weren't only a couple of years old I'd probably upgrade to all new Garmin stuff.

I have Raymarine on my Whaler, a newer Hybrid Touch, I like some of the feature but feel the Navionics charts suck compared to Garmin.

We have a new Simrad touch in the tender, bought charts for it and they don't come close to the Garmin blue charts on my iPad...

Sandy,

The worldwide basemap is a superior map to any of the other brands base maps. Unless you are fishing you really do not need to buy the 'Upgrade' map IMHO.

The Charts in Blue Chart are probably the same as the base map.

Thanks, RN-It's surprising and if that is the case with the basemap being the same detail and soundings and data as the versions of Bluecharts, the more recent Garmin basemaps must be much better than the less recent ones I remember. That's great for Garmn owners.

But.. are there really boaters out there who don't fish ??? .:D :D Guessing at least 97.4% the power boaters I know here do and probably 1/2 or a lot more of the sailboaters. It is after all, a quaint little island with a fishing problem.

But they likely give the option for auto routing which is a nice feature.
The equivalent feature in the Raymarine MFD/Navionics combo isn't that great.

It appears you bought the inland version, which is for lake boaters.

This is the one you probably need:
