We re-comissioned our boat this last week-end and discovered both our gas tanks had been emptied sometime over last winter. That would be about 240 gallons. After talking to a few other boaters on our row of slips two others found they too were missing gasoline which would total alittle over 1000 galons of gasoline stolen just from our part of the marina. I am fairly sure that others in the marina were also hit but just havent noticed it yet as they are all just starting to de-winterize their boats also.
We keep our boat in the water at Beaver Lake in Arkansas. Our marina is not easily accesable by land and the thefts must have occured by way of water. The thought keeps running through my head that this could not have been a couple of kids siphoning gas for thier own use, just way too much gas as I'm pretty sure the 1000 gallons may just be the tip of the ice berg.
It would take an awfull lot of five gallon cans! My thoughts are that the thieves were very familure with boats and must of had some kind of barge with a very large holding tank and might be re-selling the gasoline somehow, or they have a fleet of trucks.
Anyway, I've found locking gas caps available but was wondering if any of you might know of a different or better solution to help prevent gas thefts in the future. Also any thoughts on how they managed to steal so much gas unnoticed.
Thanks for any thoughts
Rex
