Have crusader carbureted Gen 6 454 engine ( replaced old long engine with new Gen 6 long block we used al the old brackets with new components adding and electric fuel pump and Mallory distributor.
Engine stumbled at cruise of 3800 rpm after 45 minutes out of harbor then lost power. Went back to the slip replaced carburetor with rebuilt. Engine began to run again but only up to 2200 rpm. swapped carburetor with other motor same result. Replaced all ignition components, fuel pump, pulled valve covers looking for irregularities in rocker arm movement non found, all cylinders had compression 150 except 1 at 145 & 3 at 140, Checked inside distributor for loose or broken components none found. replaced breaker to main ignition voltage no change. at a loss for where to find the problem. Do any of those of you in this community have a suggestion what I can do next to identify the problem?

Check the spark advance, had severe crusaders with rusted out springs and weights.

Is that a comp check after the 2200 rpm run?
How did the plugs look????
Did you use fresh fuel??
Filters clean?
Quick prop check to rule that out.

YOU SHOULD CHECK THE FILTER IN THE CARB. SOMETIME CARB REBUILDERS DONT REPLACE IT OR THEY INSTALL IT WRONG. ALSO TRY RUNNING IT ON A REMOTE TANK. YOU MIGHT HAVE A CLOGGED PICKUP IN THE TANK. THEY PUT SCREENS INSIDE THE TUBE AND THEY WILL GET BLOCKED WITH DEBRIS JUST REMOVE THE SCREEN EVEN IF YOU DONT SEE ANYTHING ON IT.

I'll say again, spark advance, been there done that, same RPM's and the like. You have to pull the plate in the distributor to find it.
I replaced the ones I found with new electronic distributors not just the upper mod.

I have to agree with Steve. That definitely sounds like an ignition problem, timing advance. You need to pull the distributor (Mark the location the rotor is pointing before you pull it - makes it easier to set up after the re-installation.) Check the weights and springs I noticed that you replaced the distributor when you replaced the long block. Check that the distributor has the correct springs and weights for your engine. I have a feeling that the weights and springs are the wrong ones, limiting advance. You'll need to check with a Mallory distributor as to the correct ones. They're usually identified by paint color. If in doubt, just replace them with the ones for your engine; they're inexpensive. Hy

recheck the spark plug wires for correct firing order. sometimes the simplest things can be over looked. specifically number 2 and number 4 cylinders. I have seen these crossed on two seperate occasions. bothe cylinders will still fire because they are both so close on the compression stroke but out of "time enough to keep revs down and loss of power.

good luck
