I am a brand new boater with a 1986 Carver Mariner. The vessel starts intermittently because the neutral position has got to be exact. I have had it start and let it run to warm up. I then secured the engine and tried to restart it without touching the gear shifter. Nada, any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Flaky switch in the control. Could be loose. Pull the control head, check the switch and replace if necessary

My neutral safety switch has worn out - so every time I need to start the boat, I need to mess with the shifter until it’s perfectly placed - actually I keep the key turned, while moving the shifter to and fro until hitting a spot with good contact. Same as yours, sometimes I can start it, shut it off, and then try to start it again without touching the shifter, and no luck.

I’ll probably wait until after the season to replace it. I might even bypass it for the rest of the summer, but probably not.

the location of the switch will depend on the transmission you have, and the shifters. I’m not very familiar with a carver mariner, is that straight inboards, or a v-drive? If it’s straight, good chance the switch looks something like this....

On my Tiara I had the same problem, I had to change the neutral safety switch, which looked something like the above, and on that boat was mounted on the back of the engine by the transmission, it's been a decade so don't remember exactly where, but I was able to spot it and change it after someone showed me what it should look like, like alk just did.
