Trying to reach you thru this forum, but the system won't let me into the "how-to" forum. Would you be kind enough to respond to the following:

I have a 1995 Cruisers 2670 Rogue (6100#) with a blown 7.4L Mercruiser. Looking to repower; heard bad stories about Reman, except for Mercury Reman. Looking to save money but going to a bobtail. The 6.2L stroker is a good value, even with a 20% torque reduction (I just want to cruise at min planing speed w/ lowest consumption). My mechanic flat out won't install this cause he says I'll be hugely disappointed with the perf as well as longevity issues at the higher rpm's. There's a new GM 6000 Vortec tha's totally state-of-the-art, but haven't found anyone thats bob-tailed it yet? Buying a new 7.4 long block is an option, but $4100 plus dfouble the labor hours, and now old carb, intake, starter, alt, etc. Your opinion would be of the utmost of importance to me.
Thanks, Steve Fedarcyk, Fedarcyksrb2@gr5tmsn.com

In my OPINION, a hotrod small block does not equal a bigblock. You lose alot of low end torque with the smallblock, which is what you need to get a large boat up on plane. However, for what YOU want to use the boat for, the 6.2 might be all you need. I wouldn't expect much of a MPG increase at planing speed however, because the smaller motor will have to rev higher to reach the same speed.

One thing you should consider is resale. A boat that is underpowered might be harder to sell when it comes time to move up.

This topic begs the question: What will boat builders do when GM stops making the 8.1 in 2009? I just can't see a pair of 6.2s pushing around some of these bigger gas cruisers (36-40ft).

Also, you might get a better response in the "Engines, Electric, and Plumbing" or "Ask the Captain" forums. Maybe one of the mods would be nice enough to move this thread for you.

dI have a 1999 330 Sundancer with new 6.2's. They were replacements for water ingested engines. The engines were designed as drop in replacements for the 7.4. The actual configuration did require some mods (that MarineMax flat ass missed) but the performance is = albeit at a higher RPM.

The 7.4 has a 4600 RPM WOT. The 6.2 has a 5200 WOT RPM. The 7.4 cruises at 3300 to 3400 RPM. The 6.2 cruises at 3800 to 4000 RPM. The 6.2 weighs 200 pounds less per engine than the 7.4. The performance is roughly the same. I do not have enough fuel consumption data to make a valid comparison.

According to a friend who has a 330 with 7.4's told me my engines were much quieter and the engine room had a lot more room. My friend has Jasper reman's in his 330. If it were me and if it were mechanically possible, I would opt for a Crusader.

My 2 cents

David, I thought the 383 was a sweet plug & play; same engine mount locations, etc. Pls elaborate on the AmrineMax issues!

I had twin 6.2's in a 2002 Maxum 3500. I sea trailed the same boat (2001) with 7.4's and there was no noticeable performance differences. Fuel burn was "slightly" less on the 6.2's
