What do you do with a boat with a wet hull? Is this from penetrations through the hull not properly sealed or blisters or ??

this can be answered better by Al Prisco, but Sea Ray had issues with some of their coring in the past
 
Point of information:

Solid hulled boats are generally smaller than a Sea Ray 450 who's LOA is 52'

Weight is the biggest factor - more weight requires bigger engines = bigger cost to produce.

These boats were built to sell and make a profit.

Difficult to compete in the market with those bigger, thirstier engines.

My 10 meter available for sale here: www.trojanboat.com (shameless promotion) has a solid hull and zero coring below the waterline.

Lots of coring above.

Any Trojan International bigger than the 10 meter also featured cored hull construction

IMHO, all fiberglass boats require ongoing maintenance as they age.

For example, I removed all the deck hardware on my 10 meter , including the bowrail stanchions and cleats when she was 19 years old.

Did it again this past year but this time i used butyl tape.

How many boat owners do this?

According to our surveyor, Al Prisco (who I highly recommend) the sea ray in question likely had water intrusion into the transom via the top trim tab fasteners and the fasteners for the hull zinc.

When I finally have mine out of the water for a bottom job I intend to have these areas, (and maybe even the garbord plug - under discussion right now) cut out from the outside a few inches and filled with solid glass.

This will eliminate any potential future issues.

Additionally, as a preventative measure I will be re-sealing all of the deck hardware, bow hatches, windshield base and the rubrail/hull to deck joint screws on her.

Remember, this is a 25 year old production boat

A boat like the one surveyed would make a great dock queen or a boat to take out on a calm day.

One would not want to get caught out in 8-10 footers on her

So the problem with water intrusion was in the transom only? Was the rest of the hull okay?

Al Prisco,
I assume this can be fixed, I guess pricey to do such, any ball park number you would think a fix would cost?
I ask just out of curiosity, point is this will need to be fixed and I guess this could happen to anyone.
 
As Al Prisco stated, the transom is the most important structural part of the boat. This is where the stringers, hull sides, hull bottom and everything "connects" and is actually designed to "flex"

In addition to her wet transom, this vessel showed two other wet areas: a spot port side from the rub rail - (hull to deck joint) down and a small area around the anchor locker drain.

Starboard side was fine.

We never did the actual hull bottom, as the survey was stopped at this point.

At the present time I have a contract on a sistership who has seen far less deferred maintenance.

If she passes the hull survey and the CAT engine survey, I'll take the necessary steps to insure there will be no moisture intrusion for the duration of my ownership.
