Does anyone remember my last "glitches" posting? Odd electrical occurances? Well, the Gremlins finally came out.

Two weeks ago my boat went up in flames. I received a call from my neighbor that there was smoke coming from the hatch and companion way door. (Boat stored on trailer at my house for the winter) Needless to say I rushed home to find the street in front of my house filled with fire trucks and gawking neighbors.

My heart sunk as I saw my boat with black water running off and soot trails from every opening. After about two hours I was able to go onboard and acess the damages. Amazingly, the cabinets are still intact, with chared laminant, of course and the fibreglass hull is sound.

Apparently the problem lied in my circuit panel. I had the boat connected to 110v at the house to charge up the batteries (getting ready for boating season) and something shorted out, caught fire and climbed the aft berth privacy curtain to ignite the headliner. The rest is fried chicken, or maybe BB-Q, anyway I think you know what I mean.

The most unfortunate circumstance is that my insurance company is giving me a really hard time about covering the repair. They are refusing to cover the full cost of the repair and are using prorated values for everything (remember, this is a '93) They calculate I'll get about $2700 for everything. The headliner alone is going to run me about that as it has to be custom made (remember, it's a '93). So,bit of advise here ..."BEWARE ERIE INSURANCE, IF YOU HAVE THEM, GET RID OF THEM!!!"

Regal has pointed me in the direction of a few people that may be able to help, but don't have parts for my old girl. I now face the emotionally difficult decision, be smart...part her goods out and sell her hull to a salvage yard, or try to restore her. (there was once a day when I'd let my wife go before my boat!)

I don't think I'll need to worry about those glitches for a while. Anyway, save the flowers, send cash, 'cause we ain't gettin none (not much, anyway)from the insurance!

Sorry to hear about your loss. Your case is why it so important to know what type of insurance you have on a boat. I forget the different types by name but I have an agreed value type. In effect the policy spells out how much the boat is being insured for up front.

Keep after the insurance company. BTW - just a shot in the dark but since the boat was on your property and connected to the house wiring, I wonder if you can make a claim to the homeowners insurance as well?

Home is insured with the same company. At least until the end of the month. I've switched to another company, no suprise there I'm sure. Thanks for the tip on the agreed value coverage.
