Glycerine Lubricant

I am getting ready to change the impellers on the boat and Volvo suggests using glycerine lubricant to make the job easier. I thought that this came with the new impeller kits however when talking to the parts guy yesterday he said they did not. If this is the case, any suggestions on where to get glycerine lubricant or is there anything else that will is safe to use? I am afraid if I use the wrong product it will break down the rubber on the impeller as the boat won't get wet for another 45-60 days.

I would use liquid Murphy's Oil soap. Once the water hits the soap it will flush out.
 
I use Pam cooking spray.
I also wrap a few cable ties around the inpeller to compress the blades and slide it in, cutting the cable ties as I go.
 
KY Jelly as a lube. Its main ingredient is glycerin. WRT the impeller, because of Mercs simply wonderful design, I can't get to mine. I wonder if a small engine ring compresser would work as opposed to cable ties.

Whatever you do, do NOT buy the KY Jelly AND the cable ties at the same store at the same time. At least not without video. :D
 
I generally wipe a little silicone dielectric grease on the impeller & wear surfaces since I always have that handy. Some just use a little dish detergent or teflon spray,etc.. A hose clamp can also help with balky impeller installation or a few wraps of string or cord. darn near any lubricant you have will work including olive or coolking oil, dish soap, hand soap even lube oil if you run them for a while afterward to wash off the petrolium.

Thanks for the input guys. I have read about the KY thing but was hoping to save myself the embarrassment... I think I'll send the wife to Walgreens on her way home from work...

Do they make "fuzzy" cable ties? [:-eyebrows]
 
No embarrassment if you buy the KY in the gallon size
 
+2 on the silicone dielectric grease.

Test whatever you might want to try as a lubricant on a clean cloth and rub the old impeller,if it turns black, don't use it.
 
I've found the 100% pure silicon plumbers grease at Ace Hardware works great. It stays on quite a while until water really starts lubricating. No solvents to ruin the neoprene.

As for KY works good if you don't use the pink and blue tubes both on the impeller. The pump housing will overheat ;)

While she's at Walgreens, ask her to pick up some glycerine. That's where I bought some last. It's cheap stuff.

I use dish soap. Always have some on the boat, it's cheap, effective and guaranteed to wash off.
 
You can buy glycerine at any drug store. No need to use anything more exotic.
