I'm planning on taking the grandkids fishing this summer and am more familair with Moriches Bay than Patchogue Bay. We're going out of Corey Creek/ Blue Point Marina. Can anyone give me some advice as to where to take the grandkids where they have a chance of catching some fluke or some stripers? Even if the fish are undersized and have to be released (which we'll do), I just want them to have some fun fishing. Thanks in advance. Hy

JohnC and Andy our the fisherman here, hopefully they will chime in.

I also assume tiieng to the bridges must be good spots, Robski always reports the fisherman are always there :)

Or floating in the middle of a channel seems to catch the big ones...

JohnC and Andy, where are you? I need your help. I've got two of our grandkids coming out on Saturday because Grandpa promised to take them fishing. I can't disappoint them. Any other fishermen or fisherwomen can jump in with locales too. Thanks. Hy

There's a bait shop on Montauk Hwy and River ave in Patchogue. Go in and ask the guy inside. He would have as good a handle as to where to go and what is being caught. When I go fishing it's for red, white and blues. I catch one every time.

Hy sorry I don't know much about that area but in fire island inlet the seabass and porgies are running strong maybe you can get some more info from the local fishing site noreast.com

My buddy who works a fishing boat out of Captree told me to work outside the state channel on the west side of the bridge or stay on the south side water just east of the Robert Moses bridge. I was just asking him the other for places to fish. You can also check the fishing reports on the fishingline.com or causeway.com. Also the noreaster (I think) .com.

West of the bridge would be a good idea, a bit of a ride from Corey Creek

You could also try the channel from Ocean Beach west to Kismet. Also the Kismet reef will provide some action for the kids.

I have my boat out at Montauk now so I don't have any updated local info right now. Your best bet would probably be to head to the Fire Island inlet area, normally from the bridge out to the inlet you should be able to catch fluke on squid and spearing this time of year. You'll have a better chance for bigger fish and more keepers outside the inlet but depending on conditions that might not be good with the kids. I'm not sure what's going on with the striped bass right now. Noreast.com will have recent reports.

Thanks, guys. That's a great start. I'll stop at the bait shop on the way to the marina, but it looks like the Bridge area is the place to go. It's about a 15 minute run from the marina once I get to open water. Now, I need you guys to make sure the weather will be clear and calm on Saturday. Last summer, one of the kids got seasick in the bay; he never made it to the side of the boat. Thank goodness for the transom shower! Hy

Brad,
At this time of year you can fluke in the Narrows, west cut, east cut. You can clam chum stripers near the inlet on the inside. I have a couple of spots that are perfect even with heavy boat traffic. Haven't fished there in years but I have Moriches down pretty good.
You really need to choose and focus your effort for either fluke or bass. Bigger fluke are now in the bays and are very aggressive. I just took my triplet niece and nephews out yesterday and they had a blast and even had a couple of very nice fish. Had 3 more today.

Bass are still after clams and that's easy fishing...

thoughts?

And yes, catching fish in the FI Inlet too.

Got a live well?

It looks like my choices are try to shoot over to the Robert Moses Bridge and fish in that area or go back to where we used to be -Moriches, and the areas by 17 and such. The plan's for Saturday. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks, all. Hy

If you're going to go for fluke consider the narrows and right in front of the coast guard station
