The Erie canal system is still down. The delays may be extensive. One loop'r at our marina and the staff have recieved notification that lock 10 on the Erie will be out of service for an undetermined time.
If you don't have clearance issues the Champlain canal may offer an alternative but make sure your boat has no clearnance issues or depth requirements that cannot be dealt with. Note that the Champlain canal is not open yet either.
When a second loop'r said he had to be in Chicago in 30 days the authorities told hime to find another means to get there.
People are canceling their plans, turning around, or shipping their boats if they are small enough.
If you know people headed north to NY that are in process of doing the loop, make sure they are aware of the situation and refer them to the authorities -> http://www.canals.state.ny.us/news/notices/index.html
Hopefully this mess will get cleaned up soon but we've heard of some serious damage. -> http://www.news10now.com/content/top_stories/default.asp?ArID=71638
