Well our looooong boat trip is over.

We cut it short 1 day and came home today thru moriches.

We spent 3 nites at essex, 3 at mystic, 3 at sag and 2 at WHB.

Boats ran great, no issues.

Moriches was a breeze at high tide, well marked. Glad we did it today as opposed to tommorow in the rain.

We met a few RO's from here.

All in all, great trip.

WHB was real nice. Frank, the dockmaster is a nice guy. I was checking out his 40' Searay that he wants to sell. It's a sweet boat and a good price but for the money I would rather look at a older flybridge.

Town was the nicest out of all the towns we hit.

I have decided I would rather do moriches at high tide than ocean. Lot more interesting. Moriches is not as bad as everyone says. If you stay on plane and follow the buoys you area fine.

One thing is certain the path changes. I was watching my last years route and it strayed at numerous points. The other issue is people fishing in the channel. The clog a narrow waterway and block the buoys. They probably own marine repair shops and hope you run aground!
 
WHB marina and the town are great....we love it there. Hopefully we get there when Deb gets back.

Franks boat is perfect.....he's over anal with it....but I too would much rather have an older flybridge......( like the 1999 400DB with Cat 3116TA's at SS3 )

Moriches is not a problem ( except by the CG station too ) as long as you stay in-between the cans.
 
Welcome back… We will be doing a similar trip beginning Thursday next week. Leaving at 5:30AM to get to the Moriches just around high tide. WHB will be our first stop. If Franks deal is sweet, I may pull in with a 32 and leave with a 40.

Was the dog leg / by the USCG station in approximately the same place as last year?
 
Dave - sounds like a great trip. I was thinking of getting down your way from CT to visit WHB - say in August. If you say that WHB was the nicest town, compared to Mystic and Essex, it must be one to see. What exactly did you like?

I would love to hear Dave’s and Walter’s detailed critique of WHB.

My wife and have been going there for the past 5 years at least 2 or 3 times a season. Mostly as a stopover to time the locks going east or the Moriches tide going west.

The town has a Hampton’s feel but not quite as fancy as East Hampton or similar eastern LI towns for the rich and famous.

Has many restaurants, ice-cream shops, movie theaters, and plenty of stores, all within a short walk from the marina.

The town marina is up against a parking lot, but they did a great job in the decking and landscaping with BBQ’s and a gazebo that make it very pleasing to the eye.

If you want to go to the beach you can get a free pass from the Dock Master. It is a bit of a hike, but doable. We take a 3$ cab ride.

I also love the farm stand along the walk to the town… By late July / August they have the best LI tomatoes and veggies.

The town had lots of choices of places to eat that would allow us to have the dog. Plenty of ice cream shops and other little shops. The walk to town is close. Mystic is also a nice town but a cab ride, whereas this is a short walk. Sag Harbor was also a nice town, but just a little too glitzy. The marina itself is a good place. Only 10 transient slips so you won't have a crowd.

The dog leg looked like it moved, at least my gps was showing me off my old track. The channels matched up. With the weather today looks like I wonder if we made a bad decision to leave. I wonder if the had the fireworks. We figured it would be cancelled and then we would get stuck coming home in rain, so we bolted. But looks like we could of made it without rain, though I am sure the bay is very rough as it was building yesterday when we came home.

As for Frank's boat, its a good buy. Very clean. It's a 2006 with diesels. I would do it but for that kind of money I think I want a flybridge. I never said I wanted a flybridge but the wife likes them. We find Walter's boat very comfortable for hanging out. If you had Frank's boat you would use the cockpit alot. He has nice glass all around and heat and a/c in there.
 
Excellent information - thanks. Might have to go there and enjoy the place. Seems straight forward about getting through the locks - per the LICC sticky.

WHB, is a great place for all the reasons stated above. Frank (the new dockmaster) is a great guy and goes out of his way to help you. IMO, WHB is right up there with Block and MYC. Mystic was great, intresing place and plenty to do. Essex was quiet and the town was uneventful. Sag was good, nice town, lot's of people, lot's of mega yachts, very visually stimulating if you get my drift :}

Really had a good time and it was nice too meet Mark and Pat as well as Andy, Mel and Gypsy.

FYI, if you decide to go to WHB, I suggest you follow Andy, he dug a new channel for us. :}

we had a great time as well!
Well that new channel is costing me a diver this wednesday to check my shafts, wheels & rudders -
I have a slight vibe at lower RPM & Load - may be nothing - I'm hoping
 
Andy why is it I hear that familiar refrain, "I hate it when that happens!". Hopefully it's nothing serious.

If all else fails perhaps more horse power will help.
