Have not seen this much Ice on the bay for a few years now. The Ice Eaters have been running 24/7 at my club. I have heard stories about cars driving on it, guess that would take a much longer freeze.

Am I suppose to mention... Block Island ??

[:-bouncy][:-crazy][:-drunk][:-eyebrows][:-jester]

I heard Block Island Sound was frozen over!

Somewhere, in a box in my garage, I have slide photos of cars on the bay, saws making holes for clammers, and the clammers on the ice on the GSB. I never would've believed it if I hadn't been there to see it. It was probably around 20 or so years ago that I took these photos.

It must be winter....

WTF…..

I am booked at Champlins Block Island 7/13-16 and excited.

Oh S$!%, did I just mention Block…. Ok Don, I owe you 2 beers.

Would love to see them...

Older members at the LIYC talk about it every winter.

ARGH!

Radio... my post was in vain!!!

(sigh)

I got you the beers and you lost them!

Hey....... nobody tell Bob that they use to ice-skate from Montauk to Block Is. years ago......he may want to try that next. ( we can hope can't we )

I can remember driving on GSB out of Bellport in the 60s.

When the bay freezes over is it one big sheet or in Blocks of ice?

Brad, you calling me old???? <G> Ok, so now I have a winter project.......find the slides (I still have a projector!) and get prints made of them. If I'm lucky, I'll have it done by spring! (But I will try...........will be interesting to see again)

I've heard the deer on Fire Island got there by walking across the bay when it froze over years ago. Actually can't imagine how else they did get there!

Barb.......... Your right... thats probably how they got there.......unless they took the ferry. :) :) :)( kiddin )

I've also heard of cars out on the bay years ago....when it froze over. They say that one went thru the ice ....just east of the Lindenhurst cut...and is still there . Anyone hear that story before ????

I remember that during the winter of 1976/77. I remember seeing the clammers out on the bay in pickup trucks, and big snow drifts on the ice. Newsweek had an article recently about all the talk of 'Global Cooling' around that time.

Don, I remember news reports about one car specifically. I forget the details. I vaguely remember it being that someone parked too close to the ice, car rolled out on the ice, then the ice broke away, car floated on it for a bit and then sunk. But I don't remember exactly where (was Lindenhurst/Babylon general area) or if they recovered the car.
