Has anyone ever encountered a water spout in the GSB? while boating from the Riverview on Friday a nasty black cloud rolled in just east of the RM bridge. A few minutes later a water spout popped up and it grabbed the boat hard. It was really scary and I'm not afraid of much on the water.

......a few years ago ( maybe 6 ) there was a severe wind storm on the GSB.....I remember......it actually picked up a boat going thru the Lindenhurst cut......and put him up on the island to the east.

It did some real damage in the area.

I was at Oakdale yacht club on Friday evening around 5:30 PM and saw what looked like clouds lowering down to the water. Is that the time you saw the water spouts?

In 2000, I was in haunts(sp) creek just north of the Jones beach fishing pier aboard a CG 41 UTB when a cold front came through. Two water spouts appeared just in front of us, we were then hit by a burst of wind in excess of 50 plus knots for about 5 minutes. The coxswain somehow kept the boat in the channel. Wild stuff.

The Labor Day storm of 1998 had a water spout that caused a fatality to an older man on a sailboat between lindenhurst and copiague. We were at hemlock, saw the clouds coming in and returned quickly to the dock. We got there just as the hail started coming down. It was so windy that I just wrapped myself in the mooring cover to hang on, getting pelted in the back from the hail (I actually had welts from it). Wind knocked over some boats up on blocks, and nearly every table and bbq grill ended up in the canals.

I remember that Labor Day. We weren't too far from our house when all of a sudden it was over us. Hail was killing my head. Flew down the canal apologizing to neighbors for making a wake but we were scared to death on our open center console. By the time we got to our dock the sun was out but it taught us a lesson to watch the clouds more carefully and don't take chances. We did see the sky get dark in the west but I kept saying "oh, we have lots more time before it's here"...........NOT!

I'm kind of thinking it's something I'd prefer to see from the sure, but what exactly is a waterspout and what does it look like?

It was just around 5:30 on Friday. We went for our first long run, it was a nice day. We were just coming back and in a flash this cloud came in. It seemed to follow us. The sky west of the RM bridge was as blue as could be. I told my husband to gun it to get passed the cloud and before he could the spout came up/down whatever it does. I grew up at Oak Beach and never saw anything like it. It was scary to see how he lost control of the boat for a second, it felt like it was sucking us in. Then it rained for a minute, and was over, very weird.
