Guana Cay and Exumas

Looking at the explorer charts web site, no problem!! There's only a few places showing as out, at least so far. so, with a little planning and slow cruising, doesn't look to be that big a problem.

As far as I'm concerned the Exumas it is!! (At least for now) :)

We are still hopeful. We think we can do Spanish Wells and round trip from there on a tank easy.

I've got a 300-mile range at cruise speed. I could stretch that out at hull speed, but I'd rather not :-)

Nassau is the place for fuel anyway. It s only 150 nm round trip from Nassau to staniel so if neither staniel or Samson has fuel it s still not that much of an issue

I was disappointed with the abacos... Not even close to the exunas

Have you called down there to check on fuel availability?

And don't forget about the marina at Highbourne Cay. They have fuel to.

Hurricane Hole Marina in Nassau had very good fuel prices last year, not much more than we paid in FL. As Pascal said, you should have plenty of fuel range to go from Nassau throughout the Exumas and back to Nassau to refuel, it is just not that far.

Dan, have they solved the power blackout problems in the Abacos from last year? As I remember they had some problems with oil supply and generator parts. Marsh Harbor always seemed to have good fuel supplies while GTC and Guana never seemed as reliable as Marsh harbor.

I forgot about the black and brown-outs. We had problems in West End as well as Elbow (Hope Town). The latter being the worst.

I hope fuel availability isn't too much of an issue. I'm really looking forward to seeing the Exumas.

Rick at this point the power has been relatively reliable. After a couple of months on Elbow I only recall a few short outages. HOWEVER, this is during the cool months. The new power plant is still not fully exploited from what I gather and several distribution problems may exist.

For those with experience (meaning: Pascal & Bill), what will we find for Wi-Fi in the Exumas? I'm sure some marinas have something, but what about the park? I hear it's weak?

Sadly, my trusty $60/month unlimited Verizon data roaming plan is no more. I'm cautiously optimistic that BTC now has a pre-paid $40 data plan. Sara Lewis (as in "Explorer Charts") has been using such a SIM in a USB modem for the last few months with good luck. The problem is finding a BTC office that knows about it and can sell it (bahahahahaha).

You'll find WiFi at most of the marinas. And there are hot spots in Georgetown that you can pick up while anchored out if you have a Wave or Syrens type system. But the speed and connectivity can be hit or miss.

I would look for the BTC sim card in Nassau before head to the Exumas.

That's the contention. I went to BTC office in HT and they told me you had to have a 2 year contract for a data plan. But she was going to call Marsh. I also vote to check with a higher authority in a more populous area.

I m not aware of getting a short term competitive data plan

Wifi is pretty good in the exas but it is rarely free

With the rogue we had string free wifi at Norman s cay. At the park, the signal is strong with the rogue, marginal without and $15 a day

Around staniel, average signal around big majors anchorage although better in some spots. Excellent near SCYC and at Samson cay. $10 or $5 a day with prepaid cards sold at all marinas.

Note that there is a bandwidth limit in addition to the daily fee, 100 Meg a day, except at the park where it s 50'meg a day. So forget skype

However, one can call the States using a sim card in the phone. Fifteen bucks for the card and a buck something a minute if you need to call.
