Happy end of hurricane season!

The 2014 Atlantic hurricane season is now officially closed – and conditions are not conducive for any late surprises.

“Arthur" was the first named storm, and the lone hurricane to make landfall this season. He glanced off the nose of North Carolina's Outer Banks causing little more than a windy, rainy 4th of July for the mid-Atlantic coast.

Coincidentally, the only named storm to make landfall last year was also the first named storm, Andrea, which brought tornadoes, heavy rain, and minor flooding to portions of Florida, eastern Georgia and eastern South Carolina – very early in June 2013.

That makes two tame years in a row. Let's hope for the same in 2015 - but don't count on it!

The 2016 Hurricane Season starts June 1. Look for predictions from NOAA and AccuWeather in the spring.

I'm happy with the way it has gone here in The Great Northeast* for the last 10 years. No storms at all.

We're glad to the see the backend of this years season as well. We took a 1-2 bang 7 days apart. Flo was suppose to be a sub-tropical low passing to the west with forecast 30-40 winds. We took 100+ from the NNW which dropped and ripped a lot of vegetation and pulled a lot of power wires and poles down. Whiel cleaning up from that storm we were preparing for Gonzalo with no power. That was suppose to go 30-40 miles to the west but we had 120+ from the east...then the eye then 120+ from the west. That storm tore up when Flo hadn't touched and ripped out more power. We were out of power for 13 days. Still today we have 100's with landlines/security systems.
I had trees on my property literally blow out of the ground that had been planted for the past 15 years. We are still cleaning up from that storm and many homes that lost the heavy stone roofs still ahve not been repaired.

The problem with :hurricane season" is that hurricanes don't know about it. We got caught in Arthur on our cruise.

BestMate we were off the Island for both of them. That does not mean that we missed the cleanup work when we returned. No structural damage. That is because we don't build houses like our neighbours to the west of here. Imagine if they had taken a one two blow like that! They would be clearing the whole lot with a machine & putting what was a house into a dumpster.

Lots of tree damage here too. Been picking at the cleanup for almost a month. Been giving the chainsaw a good workout. Two huge bonfire piles. Almost finished.
