Ch 9 is mostly used for bridges here in Florida.

Heard on ch 9 earlier this week

"Bascule bridge bascule bridge can you open the bridge?"

Silence

"Bascule bridge bascule bridge can you open the bridge"

Silence then someone asked

"What's the name of the bridge you need opened "

"I don't know my gps says bascule bridge"

Long silence

There are about 15 bridge in Miami market bascule bridge. Heck they are all bascule bridge here ...

Thanks to Wikipedia, I now know what a bascule bridge is. Never heard that term before.

No mention of the vessel hailing either? At least he or she didn't say "breaker breaker good buddy, what's my 20?".
Pretty funny, though. I bet it happens a couple hundred times a year by the clueless, but we all have to learn somehow.

My favorite to hail is the George Bush bridge. That must drive some people insane!

Bascule Bridge this is Ton Ton, Ton Ton calling.

FL should rename a bridge for Obama. It will only open for people that don't pay taxes.

Could be the guy was new to the area from a foreign country. Learning curves exist.

I'm not getting your point. I'm from MD and bridges monitor 13 here. When in FL I know bridges monitor 9. There's not much excuse for ignorance with all the technology we have at our hands today. And if the captain was confused about how to call the bridge tender, why not name his vessel? I always do. Heck, I got stuck at a bridge in that area, with no response, called another bridge and they made a cell phone call for me to the bridge that wasn't responding. Easy!

Since when is MD a foreign country :)

Not every one was as lucky as you to be born knowing all the rules and protocol.

Learning the Law, procedures, and rules for operating a car/truck does not exempt one from learning the same for a boat.

I wasn't born knowing anything but I do know how to do research. "STATE" and "COUNTRY" are similar, are they not? Learn the rules of where you travel or stay home. What happens if you break the law in another country (or state). Do you get a break for being ignorant?

We re talking common sense here... there are dozen bridges no the river, a few block apart and they're all marked bascule bridge on the chart. It's no time about knowing rules, it's about not realizing that you need to ID the bridge you're calling.
