Helm switches

I have a 2000 maxum 2100sc with some pretty tattered OEM helm switches.

I'm finding most spst switches only have 2 terminals and spdt 3.

My OEM spst 's have a 3rd terminal, and the spdt has 5.

I assume this extra terminal is a ground.

Necessary?

The new switches work without this extra wire.

These are marine switches.
