Help! Boat Problems

I have a 1977 Glastron ssv-188 18',I/O 190hp omc outdrive. I was running across the water and all of a sudden all forward motion stopped. It was like the prop fell off. The engine reved up. I immedialty pulled the throttle back and it didn't click into neutral like normal. The motor will rev up but it will not click into forward, reverse or neutral. I was told I spun the prop so I took it to a prop guy and he said my prop was fine. He said my problem was most likely in the electric shifter. Do you have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot my problems. I cannot afford to take it to a mechanic at this point. Any ideas????????? Thanks for any suggestions
