I think I might have found out what it is. Is this an oil low pressure audible switch? Until I took the rubber boot off I could not see what looks like a stud for a wire to go to that is broken off. There were no wire going to it. You can see in the last picture if you zoom in it is right next to the oil sender. I am going to put a new low oil pressure audible switch there now.

Looks like a Low Oil Pressure SWITCH (not Sender for a Gauge to me, terminal broken off. Was there a wire trailing from the harness? Maybe with a terminal still plugged into the connector? They work by grounding the circuit to the light or alarm. And, they come in various pressure ratings. I think 4-psi and 7-psi. Don't hold me to that, but I can say that pressure has to get REALLY low for the switch to close.

Looks like it could use a good scrubin.
Jim

It needed a lot more than a good scrubbing Here is a look at the bottom end.

Looks like it took awhile to get that way though.

Do ypu think the owner would have caught this if the sending unit wouldnt have been defective?

On the other hand the engine is clean inside. Modern oils are outstanding.

Could have but I don't think it would have made much difference. Blew an oil hose on the way to Bimini. Was running on plane when oil pressure dropped and engine shut down. I cut the hose a inch or so where it split and put a clamp on it. Top back off with oil only lost about 2 quarts or so. Started back up and was knocking so I knew it was toast already . So I ran it any way back across the stream until she let go and came on home on on engine. Had to leave a day early because seas were suppose to pickup to 4 to 6 feet or so and everyone wanted to get back while seas were still 2 feet.
It is the original engines that came in the boat so it is a 1986 model year so I guess It had a good life and not done yet as I had it rebuilt and it is going back in.

I blew the same hose on mine. But mine did not come apart. It did toast the crank though. have it appart in the garage now.......D......

Was there some evidence of aging on the hoses that blew? something that people might look out for?

Mine didn't. It appeared to me to have been over crimped. And of course on the end you can't see....D......

Mine blew at about the same place close to the crimp. Yes the hoses did look to be breaking down after close inspection. Had new hoses made up at hydrolic hose shop two sets. they said they should be good for ten years then replace them whether they need to be or not. about 200 dollars for both sets including new hoses for transmissions also.

It takes a contortion to change the oil filter on our single engine MerC, but I think I'll stick with that technique. I'd planned at first to install a remote filter kit. These incidents and others, MerC and Volvo both, have erased every trace of jealousy I had. Well, most of it, at least till I'm trying to work a strap wrench, and a bread pan, keep my glasses on, not develop a cramp... No jealousy sitting comfortably at the computer...

Seems as though both of these incidents are nearly identical. Same engine same part failure in the same place and the same protection failed also. The low pressure shut down switch was also bad on mine. I will have new of both the pressure switch and shut down switch and am adding a manual gauge to the cluster with a audible alarm as well as a visual alarm.......D.....

JD: On my diesels I drained the filter before removing it nice and dry without being a slippery mess. Don't know if that would help you.

That's where the bread baking pan comes in. It's about 4*8*2" and I folded the "handles" on the ends down flat against the ends. Just fits in between stringer and block. Then I loosen the filter and let it drain. I think I can only use the "short" filter and successfully get it out of there. Things HAVE gone wrong. It's on a lift so because of that I put the hull drain plug in before I start on an oil/filter change.

Looks like you had some leakage from a freeze (expansion) plug as well...
