Live in Illinois. Have 2nd home 50 miles East of Nashville. This is where Center Hill Lake is located. 64 miles long. Found a boat- 1992 Regal Avanait. 360 hours. Engine just rebuilt with only 3 hours on it. Asking 16,000. Super clean boat and ran real smooth.

Question- is $16,000 with trailer fair price?
Has a slip at marina (which is covered) and runs $200 a month. About right?

Finally, I have seen some Regal Boats with the Wing where you can have lights or speakers. Saw a bigger Regal boat 25/26 Commador? with a wing. Does Regal or anyone else make this wing that I can put on the 1992 Avanti?

Thanks, I am very new to boating.

You don't give enough info to help such as size of boat, engine type, etc.

Take a look here and see if you can find the boat you are interested in.

Also, get a boat survey before you buy. Well worth the cost.

1992 Avanit 24 foot. 320 hours. 3 hours on new rebuilt engine. Comes with Trailer. Very clean. All canvas enclosures.

Hi Tully,

Look on the NADA guides for pricing info.. I'd might consider offering less... pending a successful SURVEY.. and sea trial. I would not purchase the boat without a survey.

It's a buyers market these days, at least in our area.. all he can say is NO... you might just end up with a real steal on it. (Not knowing the resale values, I'd opt out for more like $12K or so, just to see what happens.. pending the results of the survey that is) Check the NADA Guides or www.bucnet.com.

We he originally was at $17,500. Went to $16,500 OBO- lowest he will go is $15,000. Seems like a lot of boat for the money. It is kept at a covered slip and out of sun. He is second owner and has all paper work and service history from day one. He has original invoice of boat and says was a little ove $100,000 new. Can this be right?

$100K for a 24 footer?

Wow. Must be made of gold.

Right now is a buyers market.

Tully,

My suggestion would be to make him the offer/pending the survey and sea trial and be prepared to walk away.. there are a million boats out there that are for sale.. you know that, and he know's that.. he'll take any reasonable offer if he really want's to sell it.

I'd research the used boat guides as suggested above... heck, get the HID number and call Regal, they should be able to tell you approx what the boat sold for new I would think. I agree with Rommer, that seems like a lot of $$$ for a 24' boat. Think about it, it's already 15 years young.. :)

If he sold it through a broker and if he got $15K, he'd only clear $13,500 for it.. that's if he got his full asking price.. thus the reason I suggested the number I mentioned above.. If it books out right, that'd be a fair offer to make in my opinion.

I ran a quick check on NADA and came up with the following numbers..

I threw a few options on there, such as:

Power Boat: CANVAS
Bimini Top $170 $195
Boat Cover - Custom - 18 ft. thru 25 ft. $190 $215
Power Boat: ENTERTAINMENT
Stereo - am/fm cassette w/4 speakers $150 $170
T.V. 10" Color $60 $70
VCR $115 $130
Power Boat: GALLEY
Water Heater - 6 Gallon $125 $140
Power Boat: MISCELLANEOUS OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
Batteries - Dual w/Switch $90 $105
Swim Step - Teak $195 $220

These are all added into the totals below:
Low Retail: $13,725
Average Retail: $15,635

You'd have to run the numbers yourself based on what this boat has.

Once again, I still think that if you make a reasonable offer that he may just take it. DON'T forget the survey.. (that too will be an out of your pocket expense up front.. so keep that in mind when you make the offer)

There is a trailer as you note.. might be worth about another $1K, but if he sells the boat, the trailer is pretty much a wash.. IMHO

His asking price might not be bad, but you will never know if you don't make the lower offer. :)
You can always come back and offer more if he don't accept... but don't be too quick to move.
I've seen $150K boats sell for in the $100K range.. you can thank the economy and $3.50/gallon fuel for the lower than low boat prices. Good luck with it.

Thanks for all the good info. He states he had a brand new crate engine installed. I think his deal is the boat slip is $200 a month and he is just not using the boat like he thought. Since I do own my own business I can write a little of this cost off. He states the Marina is the one who installed the engine and can give the boat a good bill of health. I was very suprised when he showed me the boat invoice. It really stated $105,000 (I think) ... It was over $100k. I have know idea why this boat would have cost that much but really in the end the boat will come out clean (pending inspection)... I think the $15,000 is fair price. He spent 3 hours on the water with me. Boat rode out nice. I cannot stress how clean the boat it. It is obvious it has been taken well care of.
My main concern was the boat slip has a long waiting list. I live in Chicago. My retirement home is in Tennessee where the boat is. A big plus for me. I do not have a vehicle in Tenn. to tow the boat and it is rather large and me being a newbee to this I would prefer not to have to tow. So, boat looks nice- rides nice- everything works and is in a covered slip and ready to roll. And, at $15,000 seems like lot of boat for a first time buyer. I am excited and at $15,000 is not like all the money in the world. If I do not end up using as much or does not pan out to be what I had hoped, can always sell. I know the boat from searching is in the $10 to $18 range depending on where you look.
Again, thanks for you your insight. Any additional comments always welcome. I am just learning.

Good Luck with it... it sounds like the one you've been looking for.

Regards,

As stated I am new to boating. Regal is a good boat brand I know. Is it considered a higher end boat? Just curious. I know SeaRay is known for quality boats. Bayliner kind of entry level boat. What is Regal considered as and what are they known for on their boats?
Thanks,
Tully

Hi Tully,

I'd consider Regal's to be a good Quality Boat.. without all the $$ to go with it.

Formula's & Donzi's are known for Performance and being High $$ boats... Formula & Sea Ray are also known to be of high quality and maintain their resale value...

There are also less $$ Boats out there.. I will call them starter boats.. that are of lesser quality.. I won't mention any names. :)

Regal's I would consider them to be in the Performance Luxury Yacht category... you can get a lot more boat for less $$$ - and still maintain the quality and resale value. (IMHO)

We like our Regal a lot and really, except for always wanting a bigger/newer one - have been perfectly happy with ours.. we would certainly buy another if we find what we want when the time is right for us.

Well that is good news. Again, thanks for your input. Will post pictures and updates once I secure boat.

Al Prisco is the moderator of the Surveyor forum and is a certified surveyor. I doubt you would want to pay Al to make that kind of a trip for a survey, but do find a good surveyor locally and have the boat checked out. And when you do, make sure you are there for the survey.
