Help to remove melted carpet backing

Last season, our cockpit carpet (the type with the black rubber backing) finally broke down and the backing melted to the cockpit non-skid floor. I've since replaced the capet, but I can't seem to get the melted rubber off. It's like it's fused into the flooring. Anyone know of a product to use to get this stuff off?

I used Simplegreen, hard brush, and elbow grease. If you want to go the chemical route, try xylene. I have not tried that, but during bottom painting, xylene is my cleaner upper (use with nitrile gloves). xylene is the key ingredient in "goof off" if you don' want to buy the quart size at home depot/lowes.

Another trick instead of replacing expensive carpeting, try buying black GE silicone II exterior caulking and spreading it on with a flexible putty knife. Works great! the only thing to watch is if the carpet gets wet - make sure you let it dry before covering your boat. The water would be blocked from draining from the carpeting side.

Third season with the carpet repaired this way and no mildew, mold. And repaired area still going strong.

I got mine off last year by soaking it real well for about an hour with warm, soapy water. After the long soak (you can use some towels to keep things wet if necessary), it came right off with a scrub brush.

If after that you still have some residue try Goof-Off or MEK.

You can also try Krud Kutter. It worked well for me. Find it in paint dept of HD
