can someone tell me how far the bronze colored shifter sticks out of the lower unit. Mine is 1 3/4 inch. I had a used bell housing installed mechanic is telling me it is sticking up to high to get outdrive on.this is 1978 alpha. Could it maybe be the wrong bell housing.

came out a bit small ,the the ring the arrows are pointing to should be approx. 1/4- 3/8 above the plate

it looks good do you think it could be the wrong bell housing or he could have it on wrong

It has to seat all the way down on the shift shaft and has to be aligned forward correctly and not 180* off.

Turning it clockwise, it should stop at 12 o'clock, and turned counter clockwise, it should stop about 9:30/10:00

Driveshaft splines also have to align with coupler. How far from full insertion is it not going in.

I don't have any pictures but the mechanic says it is 1/4 inch to tall. It is like the picture above so I know it is not too tall. Must be something wrong at the bell housing.

Thanks Charlie I found out it is the bell housing. The opening on my old one was 4 3/16 the one he installed the opening is 4 7/16. He claimed it was an alpha drive it came off. I don't think it could be. I guess the question now is can this bell housing be made to work with my alpha drive. I'm guessing not. so anyone know where I can get a bell housing 1978 mercruiser 260 hp.

I just counted 3 on e-bay, might be more...........D.........
