That was a tough break this early in the season. It can happen to anyone at anytime. I'm glad it was only a prop that was damaged and nobody was injured.
I ran aground right in the State Boat Channel last year, luckily I was able to get myself off. It happened when I was heading westbound just east of Gilgo on the north side of the channel. It was a lousy feeling. There is a certain pole that marks the channel that I've learned to give an extra wide berth to. I was on the correct side of it by about 25 feet or so yielding to the eastbound traffic when I hit.

Walter, it remains somewhat of a mystery. The mechanic that's doing the repair showed the pics to the machine shop that said the shaft was toast and could not be straightened. Together they feel since the shaft was bent down by the prop, the rotation of the shaft caused the strut to wear and finally break. There are three things supporting this theory. 1) Barnacles inside the crack so it wasn't a sudden break 2) The fractures on the cutlass bearing itself as shown in the pic 3) When Al Prisco surveyed the boat, he said it was vibrating and not smooth. and I should get the props checked. I did that shortly after the survey and they were found to be out of whack. However, being my first IB and FB, I honestly couldn't judge the vibration. Remember, I took the boat on a long trip 7 days prior to hauling. Four days prior to hauling, I made a small run with fellow boaters in the cockpit and it seemed to be smooth....mysterious.
I checked on the boat tonight and the fiberglass work is all done so hopefully I'll be floating by Saturday evening.
