The tide at Lindenhurst has been at least six inches higher than normal. I was wondering if the Old Inlet breach was the cause?

a couple weeks ago it was very low. I don't think the new inlet made a difference.

Nope, Gore is the one who invented Global Warming. But, it was Bush that caused it. :)

I think most of you guys missed the message of the topic. We have just experienced the worst storm tide of our recorded history, one year after Irene who did a lot of damage. The tides this week for people living and rebuilding near the shore is no joke. 150 homes in Lindenhurst alone have been condemned. Property values are shot. Everybody I live near and know are on edge. I don't give a **** who is at fault. I asked a simple question. move this to nbr if it's so funny.

I hear ya Bill. Currently there are only a handful of us living on my street. Property values will come back. There will always be a market for waterfront. People are just going to have to elevate.

I was going to say I didn't think the inlet was having that much of an effect but I just got woken up by the wind and looked outside and the water is over the dock and onto the street at Shore Road. That happened very quickly, tide didn't seem too extreme when I went to bed, now I'm starting to wonder...
 
I wasn't home this morning to see tides, but high tide was around 4:15. The water has been over the dock at Charlie's Marina on S. Broadway all week. They have to close that breech at Old Inlet, it is changing the bay front.
Hopefully moving back in to our house tomorrow. It has been a long two months.

Now we're getting close to low tide and the water is still very high (although seems like it's finally subsiding in the last hour). If the wind doesn't shift soon we could have some pretty bad flooding this afternoon when it's high again.
 
I have more standing rain water in my yard from today's storm than Sandy or any other storm.
It really poured here.
 
Send some rain down here......my lawn needs it.........
 
The wind let up and shifted so the tide went down some more and think we'll be fine later.
 
I couldnt leave my waterfront house in lindenhurst until around 11:30 this morning. My daugters new car was parked in the street & water got into her passenger back floor. Took it to car wash for a rug treatment & dry out. CLOSE OLD INLET NOW!
 
Ok, I guess I am not so sure about this. So the bay and the ocean connect. They connect at the numerous inlets we have.
Opening a new inlet in my eyes, shouldn't cause any more or less water to come into the bay.
If you have a pool and your filling it with a hose, adding another hose connected to the same house does not fill it much faster or more as it's from the same source.

Something tells me that this could be more from all the sand that blew into bay and is displacing some of the water normally there.
Plus like I said earlier, we are flooded here on the North Shore today when we usually don't flood.
Bottom line, we got alot of rain and runoff.

I am not totally convinced the new inlet is causing higher tides, but I am not expert!
 
I think the only thing the new inlet will do is increase the rate at which the bay rises and lowers at each tide. Water seeks its own level so I cant see an additional inlet bringing any more water than normally would have been there.
