Hitting a bouy. At nearly 150 mph...

Yea, don`t let him do that again, I`m thru that area all the time. Fog areas are frequent. Sends chills up my spine thinking about getting railed by this missile while out enjoying the day. Not sure about his radar if he had one, (turned on) but mine (and everyone else`s) will show a bouy that size waaaay before your close, Never mind six violations that are beyond neglectful.

mx8 - no radar on boats like that . He reportedly had a spotter plane that "disappeared in the fog."

Next time (if any) he should try for the record in reverse gear. Much slower(a few kts) and safer for all. I fear that cat is running out of lives.

When the Coasties repaint that "1 GI" gong buoy they should paint either a bullseye or a speed catamaran icon in a red X/circle on the side.

If the spotter plane disappeared into the fog, you would think the next
transmission to the boat should have been stop?

Where's Paul Harvey when you really need him.

Had a permit...... Cited for reckless?

There is more to this than meets the eye.

...All that money on a boat, and neglecting to buy a VHF with the weather channels . . ..

+1

The guy's an idiot however no Radar, GPS or electronics would have helped at this speed. David (Kida's) right do the math who issued this "permit"?

He obviously has no regard for safety or respect for the USCG. They boarded and issued SIX violations, FIVE of which are easily avoided. From the article: "six violations, including no throwable Type IV Personal flotation device, no sound producing device, no flares or visual distress signals, no pollution placard, no garbage placards, and Negligent Operations under 46 USC 2302"

Sorry but that's arrogance to the extreme. You have to KNOW you're getting boarded and questioned at some point. I'd be more willing to support him if he didn't ignore boating safety completely!

He's lucky he hit the buoy, he might have done much worse in the narrow and busy East River!
its a timed run, you are aiming for low weight. He had a helicopter and sea plane above, CG did not end up giving him anything real, all was valid and legal

its a raceboat, you are missing the point. Clearly was all legal, escorted by planes and helicopters, was given more permits and coast guard/military escorts and reattempted and succeeded 5 years later

Thanks for the follow-up....ten years later. Better late than never! Are you the boat owner or part of the team?
