I need some suggestions for an external monitor for my waste tank. I have a dial gage (w/a float) inside the tank now, but that's only seen when in the engine compartment. I would like to mount something down in the salon like you see in a camper to monitor the holding tank.

I recently installed an external tank monitor on my waste holding tank. It was a slick little system Made by Snake River Electronics called the "Smart Mini Display with Smart Chip Technology". The sensors are pressure-sensitive foil strips and mount on the outside of the tank. They somehow detect the change in density of the tank contents. The display is a small (about 1 1/2" x 2 1/2") LED panel with 5 indicators and 2 calibration buttons. I mounted it on the bulkhead between the galley and the salon, visible from the salon.
Installation was easy. All you need is 12 volts and a place to mount the panel. It seems accurate and so far is reliable.
My only gripe about the whole thing is the panel requires a rectangular hole for proper mounting. Seems to me they could easily provide a plastic surface mount bracket for some applications.

Go to the BoatFix pull-down menu at the top of the screen and check out the "Snake River" line of products. They're easy to install and don't require opening up the tank!

Ditto to both of the above. Put one on last spring. Works just like it's supposed to.

Thanks for the input. I guess I missed one important detail......I have an aluminum tank. So I need to get a gauge that has some sort of rod or float that goes inside the tank.

If simplicity and cheap is on your mind you might look at the Sealand Tankwatch holding tank alert system. I have 2 on my 35 Bayliner and they give me enough warning that its time to pump-out.

Davita,

Not trying to be a pain, but posting links to other companies' web sites are against forum rules, and isn't fair to our corporate supporter (Boatfix.com). Just a friendly reminder.

Sorry about that..I searched Boatfix for a picture of this product but couldn't find.

somebody may know better but I think that the snake river system will work with aluminum tanks.

Snake River makes an adapter kit that will allow their Tank Monitor system to work on a metal tank.
