I've got a 2002 3860 with a holding tank gauge problem. The gauge works fine for freshwater but is stuck for waste. It seems that a sensor is bad but I can't find the holding tank. Anyone have any thoughts?

scott;

try filling the tank with fresh water take it out for a spin in some seas and then empty the tank. if you get debris in the sensor sometimes it will hang up. the alternative is to pull the probe and clean it out, put it in a bucket of water and check your gauge. try shorting across the leads on the probe and see if the gauge moves to rule out the gauge or wiring to it being at fault. try lookin in the owners manual for the exact location of your tank to find the probe access point.

point of interest, rinsing and emptying the tank is self preservation before pulling the probe.

Give up! Seriously.

The gauge used will clog ALL the time. A royal PITA!!!!

There is a rubber covered fitting on top of the sensor assy. that you can hook up to a water line and attempt to clean the assy out while it is in the tank but it only works if you use it BEFORE it clogs! What you have is a 3-4" diameter tube with lots of little holes all around it. The inside has FILLED with waste preventing the slider from going up and down. Only removeing it from the tank to clean will fix it. (A real stinky job and it won't last.)

The best thing to do is to get a Snake River gauge which has a sensor that goes on the outside of the holding tank. Works great.

On the 4260 the tank is located below the aft bunk in the aft stateroom. Vic's idea is as good as any and better than most. If indeed it is not simply frozen in place by waste material that method will help break it loose. Sufficient quantities of your favorite holding tank chemical will aid in the process and probably help in the future. The key is to keep the contents of the tank liquid and not to allow waste to sit undisturbed for a season or two.
Good luck,
Mike 2004 4260

Thanks all. I'll be down in St. Pete in about a week and start trying these ideas.

On my 2002 3860, the sensor is located under the little hatch in the carpet just foward of the stairs.

Found the tank. It's located under the stairs. Access is under the bunk behind the stairs. There is a screwed down panel that provides access. We took the boat out the other day and hit some good waves. Everything working ok now. Thanks for the input.

Like Rommer said, the tank gauges are a PITA. My holding tank gauge always works but the freshwater tank only works when it wants to. Too much trouble to fix. The external gauges seem to be the best solution.
