Saw this boat get towed in today, 30 something Searay, who could ever of thought you could do so much damage to a boat with a mud/ sand bottom.
I spoke to the captain briefly, felt real bad for him so I did not probe that deeply.
He said he missed a buoy by Kismit (he motioned it was a foot or so) and he ran aground. He then said something like my passengers tried to help and "put it in reverse", I am thinking he was deep in the mud, and throwing it in reverse "snapped the drive.

Boat filled up with water, motors were submerged, cabin also was filled with water.

Good news is he is insured for 165k, mechanic that looked at it figured it was a total loss.

They can fix that for less than $20K.

Must have broke the bell housing on impact and the drive pulled free in reverse.

Totaled??? If they were stuck on a sand bar, why did it flood the whole boat instead of just to the water line.

Charlie,
Not sure, but I was told the engines were submerged and the cabin ha water waist height

Thats some serious damage. Looks like he also ripped the skeg off the port drive.

Depends on how long it was submerged for but those motors probably could be salvaged, but no warranty left making those motors pretty much worthless.

Worst thing you can do is put your running gear in reverse when you are grounded. Never know what the shape of your gear is in. I bet he was also cruising at a good speed too.

Walt, I got your e-mail, ill get around to the bill one of these days..

Ouch, I can't imagine ! A few times I've found myself alittle on the wrong side .....Walters post is a heads up to be safe

The boat was almost a total loss. The incident happened last night. The Seatow captain opted to wait until the next high tide (this morning) to attempt to pull off. Not knowing the drive was ripped off, the boat may have sank if pulled off the bar. When he returned early this morning at high tide, he saw the engine room and cabin filled with water. He sealed the hole and pumped out the water. The Coast Guard put a boarding team on the Sea Ray to watch the pumps while she was towed to the Anchorage Yacht Club.

Wow. That hurts.
Outdrives are suppose to pop up so I am surprised there is so much damage. He may of hit something as well. Mud would not rip off a drive like that. Maybe a pole stuck in the mud long ways.

Thanks pal........I saved that pic ....if you ever want me to post it.....just ask. :)

I almost did the same thing this morning about around dawn 5:15AM, we decided to stay at Alantique for the beautiful Sun Down last night and then it became obvious we were enjoying the moment too much ;-)to drive. So we went to sleep early a got up about 4:30AM. Linda and I both could not blow off work today. So I am heading north towards the red buoy below west island and now head west towards Crazy Charlie wiping the sleepy's out of the eyes when I noticed I was too far south and did not go to the second north red. I was now heading for the flats between Kismet and Atlantique that many fall victim of at about 25MPH, caught my mistake just in time. I have been doing that run for 9-10 years and never did that. My knees are still shaking.

Thank the good lord Brad! I'm glad it didn't happen to you buddy, I know how much you and Linda love that boat! Whew!!!

Thanks Pat, it was about 10 seconds to impact and would have been a very bad end to a great weekend. More so then my tools getting stolen out my garage when I was away boating. I have seen boats do it at the same location. A few years back it was a 40 somthing Sea Ray Sedan with Gulls walking around the bottom of his boat.

I forget the #'s but coming out of Atlantique or heading west from OB there is a Green then two Reds heading northwest then head a little southwest to Crazy Charlie. It is easy to forget the second red buoy to the north and head to CC but there is no water there.
