House battery showing 9.6v Is it OK?

The 510 number he talking about is the reserve minutes rating (RC).

Why do you have an 8D battery? Usually, you only need that much power to start a diesel. If your charer/alternator is not strong enough, you will never get enough charge in it and it is worthless. If this is for the house, you are much better off with two group 31's.
 
9.6v is way too low but you may as well try to charge it back and see if it s still ok. 5 years is probably time anyway. Check acid level too...

I ve replaced 8Ds at the dock, it s easier than bringing it down from a boat on the hard unless you have a forklift...

Your alternator doesn't care what size each battery is, it's the total size that matters. It will work just as hard charging two G31 or one 8D. Using 8D as house battery is little bit of overkill as multiple smaller batteries adding up to the same total will be easier to handle but you have fewer connections and fewer cell to top off.

Not really. A low amperage alternator or charger will charge the battery up just fine. It will just take a longer time to do it. Which in some cases can be a good thing.
