Has anyone been out on Great Soth Bay near Patchogue/Blue Point since Irene? Is there much debris floating around? Years ago, after Gloria, we were out in Moriches Bay and saw chunks of houses, stoves, and furniture at and just below the surface. It was travel at idle speed only. Our concern is that the same exists now out in GSB. Any advice or info? Thanks. Hy

I saw alot of boats out yesterday. I am not going out till Thursday.
Give it more time to find a home and other idiots hit stuff.
Saw a go fast doing 100 across the flats!
Crazy!
I have tons of crap in my marina and we keep pulling out wood and debris.
I don't think it's that bad but definately need to watch it.

floating pole off shinnecock...i only saw it after i passed it.

Well I can tell you that my ramp that goes from my dock down to the floating dock is out in the bay, as well as a cooler (red). Took it from the back porch and its long gone now..

Boat from our marina in merrick hit something below the waterr today ! It's going to be bad for a long time ! There is no one to clean the debris up ! Most marinas are ignoring it ! Very sad

Red 38 marker sitting in the State Boat Channel between Gilgo & Garbage cove, semi-submerged dock parts near Lindenhurst docks, a large debris field mid - span, east of Robert Moses Causeway....

They debris field is pretty incredible. I cleaned up a crap load of wood from my yard. big stuff too . 2X8x16'S . down the block at my mothers we pulled out 3 6x6's riddled w spikes. alot of docks just blew apart. be real careful.

Be real careful is right. When at my gal's after the storm, we cleaned up the yard and had to work to pull out some branches about 3-4" in diameter out of the ground. They were in about 10" deep. I couldn't help but thinking about the bad luck of being under something like that when it came out of the tree. It would look like a bad vampire movie.

It was still pretty bad yesterday afternoon. The problem is not as much with the stuff you can see. It's the stuff just below the surface that you can't see. I pulled a very thick (8" Diameter) tree lib out from under my swim platform yesterday. That would have done some real damage.
Been pulling planks with nails in them that become wedged between my boat and the bulkhead out of the canal all week.
5 MPH might be the way too go for a while. At least if you hit something at that speed you will reduce the amount of damage to some degree.

Saw a lot of debris b/w Amityville and Copiague this morning. Too many 8-10ft 2x6's to count. Several large timbers and strange conglomerations of wood, blue tarp and seaweed. Noted one red buoy in the east-west missing, and a green #20 off Tanner Park that is on the north side but belongs on the south side. Some buoys in the Amityville Cut looked to be missing and or moved too. Slower speeds and sharp eyes are definitely in order.

I did see a Bay Constable hauling a mostly sunk small barge with a bunch of junk piled on top of it.

Ron, thanks for the heads up. I was debating in launching my little boat this weekend. Markers missing in the Amity cut is pretty dang scary..

Ran to westhampton today and didn't see much stuff.

We're thinking about going out on Saturday. If we do, it'll be an idle-speed ride till I either drift for fish (which I can't seem to catch) or we anchor to enjoy the view. Hy

I was out today from the Anchorage in Lindenhurst to Bayshore, West Channel and Dickerson. I saw some wood decking, tree limbs and these floating things that looked like red cabbages. All in all not to bad but definitely keep a heads up on what's in front of you.

We saw a lot of floating black things. We think they are large snails. Also a lot of crickets and grasshoppers around. Must of blown in from marshland.

We were back out in the evening, and again this morning, and went over some of the same areas as yesterday morning and didn't see all that floating stuff. I think it must be tide/wind dependent. It all goes someplace, then maybe it comes back. Or maybe with some of the very high tides the islands will capture a lot of it.

I know this is a bay thread but for anyone interested the ocean is pretty clear out 5-7 miles. Just came down to AC and saw some trash but no big floating stuff.

Thanks Mark, I was curious what it looked like on the ocean. I was originally thinking about an offshore trip this weekend and was wondering if I'd have to deal with islands of debris out there but we didn't go anyway.
