How do boat trade in's work at a dealership?

IMHO....If you owe money on your trade in .....regardless what it is...a boat ...a car...a RV...IF you are upside down in the trade....It will become WORSE when you add your negative equity into the inflated price of a new boat....then FINANCE that mess at a crazy interest rate. You will die with that debt.

My opinion....pay your existing boat loan off......sell private ....negotiate a new deal with CASH....it speaks volumes. If you need to finance...double up on your payments ( pay 2Xs a month ) get ahead. Loans and Mortgages make $$$ for one person....the bank.

It is all in the dollars. You will probably not achieve full $$ value on either boat, but you also will have a sales tax savings (probably depending on state) and you will be eliminating the "hassle factor" in selling. Just a personal decision.

It works exactly like trading an automobile. That simple.

In fact at least one local auto dealer will take a boat in trade. I almost did that once and it was a mistake that I did not.

Why not? Do these "most people" tell you why?

Ask them to explain their rationale to you.

Just my two cents, while dealers may low ball a trade-in there are reasons to give a buyer a higher than market price for the trade-in. If your buying a boat the dealer has in inventory he is paying a small fortune for that new boat getting older in his shop every month. If you offer him a decent price to purchase his inventory (his big problem) with a trade-in at an above market price, the dealer just solved a big problem by accepting a smaller one. Find yourself in that situation and you end up with a very good deal - I did.

I just went looking for your boat for sale and could not find it listed. Those 3807's are great boats. Did you end up selling it?

The original post was from 5 years ago. Hopefully not still for sale.
