How Long Will This Take?

Hi All: I am an east coast Sea Ray owner but my son lives in SF area so I sometimes look at this forum. Just wanted to pass along some east coast advise. A friend of mine needed some fiberglas warranty work on his Sea Ray and due to various circumstances couldn't get the local MM dealer to take care of it for him, so he called directly to Sea Ray and they advised that if he had work done by a licensed Fiberglas company who calle them in advance for approval, they would pay the bill directly. He did this and it all worked out. I don't know what kind of warranty work your friend needs but if the geography of it forces him to travel 3-6 hours to get it done, quite possibly a call to Sea Ray might help. IMHO.
Anyway, happy holidays and happy boating to you all.

Thanks for all the great advise guys!

MM in TP has closed permanently due to the economy.

This guy is a mechanics' dream: he can afford to pay; his job is secure [prison guard]; he doesn't want to get his hands dirty; he doesn't want "control", he wants a get in and go type of boating experience.

Well, he will either learn its not that way or he can decide to get out of boating....... and he doesn't want any advise from me! But he is a nice guy who enjoys the delta.......

DD, congrats on the anchor. I'm sure that it is being molded and polished in China as I type this! Beware, when you enter "Not Boating Related" to wear your thickest skin and bring your best sense of humor. It really is a blast in there as long as you aren't too sensitive!!! Insults abound, but that is part of the fun.....

See ya, I'm off to the boat to see in the New Year the very best way, in the Delta!

Happy New Year everyone!

We were one of the two boats my "boating club" had on patrol at the midnight city fireworks this morning. Lots of boats and a big party at the Landing, fireworks from two barges.
It was a good mission, nderway 1730, home 0230, 60 round trip miles, 4POB.
Flutter, I've got an idea your eve was wonderful! Hopefully your friend will get what he needs.
No SR offense. Ours wasn't the only boat we considered. It's served well, four years and 800 hours almost exclusively as a utility boat. We'd buy another but it would't be the only one we'd consider again. Amazing the amount of business SR/MM have generated over the years. No BR offense either and we looked at some of those too...
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This thread got me thinking about an idea I had awhile back. That was, to get a few boats together and cruise over to SF and spend a few days site seeing or cruising the bay. I think a good time would be sometime in the spring. We made the trip about 5 years ago, but we didn’t stay. Made it to angle Island and turned around and came back. Don’t ask, long story.
If I remember right it took us about 9 hrs from Rio Vista round trip.

Does he have the luxury of scheduling it on a large outgo? However, as most know, if the winds are in SP Bay, an incoming tide is preferred...

FB, although is a trip of necessity, no reason why it couldn't also be a little bit of a pleasure cruise...

Botique hot coffee, fresh pastries, plenty of time, etc? LOL..

October, October and October. The best month of the year for the delta. Still warm, balmy days, great sunsets, no serious boat traffic and most important of all, hardly ever any wind of any consequence. The spring is nice but it can get real windy very quick.....just my two cents.

Gees, we have made a lot of trips in various Sea Rays to an from Oakland to Stockton. Three hours is pushing it but not in calm water. We always left early am. As much as some of you are envious of Sea Rays, they have to cruise fast as they generally have a petty deep v, and that meanss close to 30 mph. One of the keys is the weather, as that has more an effect than the tides at 30 mph. A couple of times we called it quits when we got to the straits. The wives just couldn't take it anymore. If the wx is good three hours is possible. When we bought our Meridian, we could no longer keep up with the Sea Ray group, but certainly could leave the Bayliner group behind. Lets see, who else can we pick on. How about an ugly old wood boat. Sorry, mea culpa.
Okay, unless your friends Sea Ray has twin V-6s, he probably can make it in 3 hrs. On the other hand, we have taken a couple of trips where we picked up new Sea Rays at Oakland and celebrated all the way back with Champagne. Left early in the morning but got back around midnight after we stopped at all the watering holes. Fun and great memories.

I spoke with my friend last night. Here's what he told me:

The trip took a total of 5 hrs port to port, but he wasn't "pushing" it. He was not expecting the strong currents in the Carquinez Straits. He felt like he was white water rafting! :D San Pablo Bay got a bit rough, so he slowed down to 11 knts to get across. [:-bigeyes2] Then the water turned flat and seeing the SF skyline was so beautiful, his eyes misted over! This was his very first trip by boat to the bay area and he really loved it. One of his engines was not running right all the way, but it did not quit on him completely. That is the main warranty issue for MM to fix.

All in all a very successful trip and he is looking forward to make many more!

That would be a fun trip, but I'd want to do it in the late summer/early fall when the wind lays down. Every October the San Joaquin Yacht Club does a down bay trip. It takes two weeks total, but many folks just partake in a portion which best fits their schedule.

No way he gets into the SeaRay Club with that poor performance. I'll bet he's already been blacklisted.
