How to determine max RPM's on engine.

I have a 1982 Cruisers with a Mercruiser 260/Alpha One in it. The question is, how can I determine the max RPM's the engine will operate safely at without causing any damage? I didn't want to peg the throttle to the max just to find out unless this can't cause any damage???
