It's official, our boat is stinky. I suspect hose permetation and am going to scope that out this week using the wet rag trick I've read about on another thread...

however, posting here because though you other Carver owners can help me find the holding tank vent....is there one? two? We get SERIOUS stink when we flush - our poor dockmates are going to kick us out of the marina soon!!!

Sorry if I sound completely dumb, I think it might be the plastic vents that look alike on both port and stbd side?

Also, where is this "filter" everyone keeps talking about in the vent....gonna change that I think.

Peggie Hall has an excellent book concerning boat waste systems (Get Rid of Boat Odors, ISBN 1-892399-15-6). It will likely pinpoint the problem.

Use your nose... sniff the vent. ( Yecch, but it should work. )

Mike If you can find the vent line coming off your holding tank, and follow it to the outside vent,,,,the filter should be in that line,,about 15 to 20" long, and 1 1'2" in Dia. There are some ways of making your own or purchasing one.

found the vent line (smaller than I thought it would be) - and found where it exits on the port side....however can't see a filter - if it's on there, it's not in the compartment where I can see and access it.

did the wet rag on the hose trick - that's part of my problem - need to replace the hoses....thinking I should pay someone to do that - couldn't get to the other end of the pump out hose I think

anyone replaced hoses before? easy? hard?

When we get about half-full on the holding tank and flush...whew!! Stinky outside...I've not found a filter on the vent line....guess I'm gonna have to install one.

Regarding the hoses - we've got pretty good access on ours....we have no overboard discharge, just a deck pumpout fitting in the port bow locker. You can access that end of the hose by opening the V-berth hatch - this may be a "secret compartment" to you...but go all the way forward in your boat....it's right about the bed...open it from the bottom....it's your anchor rode locker, and access to the water and waste hoses.

Not all boats have those carbon odor filters in the vent lines. They *do* work though, as I haven't used any chemicals or bios this year and we have zero odor from our vent. On our Sundancer, we had to change the filter every 2 or 3 years.

I just added a charcoal filter on both tanks of my boat. Very big difference! By the way. The best price is on Boat Fix!
