How to install a VHF plug?

I just bought a new 8 ft glass antenna to replace a crushed antenna.In the past I've had trouble installing VHF plugs and have tried both crimp on types (I buy 2 at a time) and solder types (The insulation melts even with a heat sink).They always seem to have a short or the connection breaks later.Is there a special plug or technique to make this job proper?The radio is to important for the antenna connection to break.
