Ok, so I am new to stern drives. I have a Regal 277XL, with twin engines. I have never winterized an I/O, only outboards.

How do I run antifreeze, and fog the motor.

I know how to fog the motor, but how do I time it with running the antifreeze thru the motor.

Also does any one know how many gallons of antifreeze, for a merc 305?

There are two ways to put the anti freeze in.

1. Run the engine to full operating temperature. Fog the engine until it stalls. Remove all the blue drain plugs and let the water out. Use a piece of wire hanger to clear the holes and make sure a lot of water comes out of each hole. Remove the hoses from the thermostat housing. Pour anti freeze into all the hoses until it backs up. Re-install all the hoses. Open each plus a little and make sure pink runs out. That will tell you that the anti freeze is getting through. You can leave the antifreeze in. Some people like to drain it all out.

2. Run the engine to full operating temperature. Remove all the blue drain plugs and let the water out. Use a piece of wire hanger to clear the holes and make sure a lot of water comes out of each hole. Use a container with antifreeze in it with a hose that goes down to your earmuffs, They sell a winterizing kit for this purpose. Run the the antifreeze through until it comes out with the exhaust. Continue running and fog your engine till it stalls.

If you are goint to run anti-freeze in then 2 people to do the job would be best. The second person can spray the fogging oil down the carb and start when you are about half through the antifreeze. Remember to drain some out of the block and test the freeze point to be sure you got enough antifreeze into the block, not just out the exhausts.

nph, hope this helps, tho I have inboards. I take hose off thru hull intake and stick it in 5 gal. pail containing 50/50 mix of 2 gal. each of AF & water. Start engine with remote starter & watch level of mixture while pouring fogging oil in carb. Once all mix is sucked thru engine, shut down. If you use this method, be careful hose does not get sucked to bottom of pail which will prevent mixture from going thru system.
