Ok, HRCC, we just finished the boat trip for 2008, but we want to plan the boat trip 2009. Here is what we are looking for.

July 3, 4, 5 - NYC to see Macy's fireworks.
July 6 - 11 - Up Hudson

Is Chelsea Piers best place for the fireworks?
We have been up Hudson to Haverstraw and Roundout. Don't want to go up to Roundout again. Want to stay more near Haverstraw, what other marinas are good? Thanks!!!

I think Liberty Landing might be better for the fireworks. If you want to stay near Haverstraw, there is not much else. You can try Stony Point Bay Marina, the only thing is that at low tide there is not much water to get in or out.

What amenities are you looking for?

I would suggest Liberty Landing rather than Chelsea Piersas as the better vantage point for viewing the fireworks if your staying at the dock.
I still think Haverstraw Marina is your best choice in this area. No low water problems, all the amenities, and a brand new restaurant at the marina...pricey, but not any more so that other nice waterfront reataurants.

I thought the fireworks were on the East River?
Isn't Liberty Landing obstructed by Lower Manhatten?
Where else besides Haverstraw? We can do a few nights there.
We like pools, restaurants, bars, floating docks, good water.

The fireworks are all around the tip of lower Manhattan. You will get the best view from the NJ side of the river.

For what you want, Haverstraw marina is the best place for you.

I'd agree with John and Hogan Haverstraw sounds like your best bet for what your looking to find.
The Macys show in the east river is the best spot to see them and you can also see the same show going off by the statue over the buildings ,but it looks weaker on that side .

The south end of gov's island is where it's at in my opinion, nice view of the empire state and the chrysler blds. also looks really cool against the skyline to boot, once you see Macys the others just dont compare, kinda like the difference between a firecracker & a blockbuster in a garbage can effect :)

We stayed at Liberty for the fireworks once, and we won't pay that premium price again. If you can hook up with the gang and see the Bowline, Bear Mnt., etc. fireworks you will be better off imho. That is unless you want to see the stuff on the east river, which we could NOT see from Lib landing. There were fireworks behind the statue on shore, but nothing at the statue which was a let down.
But then, staying at RYB the week before the 4th is great if you can get in. Too bad you guys won't come up here again... We p.o. you guys or something? Or was it my cologne?

Just got back this afternoon from a weekend at Liberty, must be animal magnetism which keeps us going there. You cannot get a good view of the Macy's fireworks unless you leave there and get out into the harbor. There are fireworks done in Liberty State Park but you really need to get off your boat and trek over to the water's edge or into the grassy park area. Dan is right you pay a premium price to stay there, amd I am still trying to figure out what for other than location. That said, we made reservations for '09 on our way out this morning!

manmade , try the east river , i would say it's better than liberty , seen them bolth and we always go to roosevelt island great view of the show + it's free.

How is roosevelt free? Are there any other good marinas besides chelsea piers on east river?

We will probably stay 3 nites on east river, 3 nites at haverstraw and I am thinking 3 nites near sandy hook someplace.

I dont think there is any marinas on the east river is there? Chelsea Piers are on the Hudson.

Also, if you are used to floating docks/fingers in Lindenhurst, be advised that Atlantic Highlands Marina, inside Sandy Hook, the docks and fingers are fixed. A slimy climb up a ladder at low tide. There are a few other smaller marinas inside Sandy Hook, but I don't know how they are set up.

I believe Jon is refering to the fact that it is free to anchor off of Roosevelt Island to watch the fireworks.. He makes no mention to docking there...

Chelsea Piers is not on the East River it is on the Hudson and you will have no view of the fireworks while staying there...

As far as Sandy Hook goes, make sure you either stay inside along the canal at one of the marinas past the seabrite bridge or go up the Navasink or Shrewsbury rivers. The tide moves strong through the area around the seabrite bridge making docking interesting.
If you stay outside of the Atlantic Highlands bridge it may be rough due to wakes (except at the Atlantic Highlands marina behind the wall. And stay away from the military dock or you might receive a visitor.
The Molly Pitcher or Channel Club are great stops.

I would suggest the Channel Club (Sandy Hook).. Great marina with Pool, TIKI bar, restaurant and only 2 blocks to the beach.

Haverstraw's Restaurant is now open and the food is great.. They have bands on the weekends at the TIKI bar.
There are a few other marina's in the area but you will have to take into consideration the tide as most of the marina's near Haverstraw have no water at low tide... under my boat at low tide I have 14 feet of water...

Yeah, I just realized Chelsea was on the hudson. I always thought it was on the East Side by the Brooklyn Bridge.
So there is no marinas on the East Side to see the fireworks?
I don't want to go out on the boat, I want to sit at the dock!
What about on the Brooklyn side?

I have been looking on marinas.com, love that site!
Does not look like there is anything on East River that handles small pleasure boats.
Maybe we should just come up and see the Bowline fireworks.
When are they?
Open for suggestions. We are looking to spend a week out before the fourth.
Can spend some time at Haverstraw, but would like at least 2 other marinas as well.

And their rain date is?
Do you have to take the boat out to see Bowline or can u see them good from Haverstraw?
