I know this has been posted before. What is the best acid for cleaning a stained hull? I believe it is either muratic or oxylic.

both. one is stronger than the other (I dont recall which). Zing or On/off are great, but discolor bottom paint. Wear gloves and eye protection though. Toilet bowl cleaner works great too!

Oxalic is second to muriatic acid. Hull cleaners contain oxalic acid (which comes from skunk cabbage originally).
Then there is the one that heats up, FSR, fiberglass stain remover, which is similar to muriatic.
You may find some stains just will not want to be removed, but it's rare.

Mary Kate On/Off is muratic acid, nasty stuff but will remove about any kind of stain. I started using one made by StarBrite with Oxolic acid which is somewhat milder, still need gloves etc. It still does the job, just takes a little longer.

Over the years I have tried most of the products on the market.
The Mary Kate is hard on bottom paint. The Starbright seems to work very well for water line stains. Most of the time I cut with water about 50/50 still works fine but saves $$. Lately I have been buying Olympic Deck Brightener. Purchase at local Home Improvement store for abour $12 for a gallon that makes 5 gallons.
I usually dilute to make 10 gallons and still works great and a whole lot cheaper than most marine products. Have been doing this for last two years on two different boats with no apparent ill effects. Try at your own risk !!

Thanks for the replies. This will get us going. It's for a buddy of mine's fiberglass dinghy.
