You can't paint over an imperfection with clear. You were right to decline. Are they spraying or brush and tip? If they are spraying it are they doing it in a controlled booth?

Yes, spraying in a controlled booth. At this point I'm really struggling on choosing a color. Impossible to do from a chip and finding a boat with same paint is nearly impossible as well. Not getting painted until spring so I have time on that.

We kept our hull color as close to original as possible which makes it much less obvious when your inevitably scratch the paint. We already knew that we liked the look so it was an easy choice.

Makes sense but since I'm painting, I want a little bit of a different look.

If you got a divorce would you marry your ex-wife's identical twin? Hell no! I fully understand wanting a change not that there is anything wrong with you boat correctly at least regarding the color.

Do not clearcoat over any paint. If you need a repair it creates a much bigger job just like Awlgrip.

Friend in my marina clear coated over Imron and had some damage during a nor'easter last winter. To do the repair correctly, he has to spray the whole side of the boat. Not good.

My advise is go with Alexseal. I did my hull in it and am very happy with it.

Alwgrip pigment and clear separates leaving the clear on the surface. When you go to repair, you can see halos due to the 2 dimensional properties of the paint.

The Alexseal mixes the pigment and clear together and it does not separate. Much easier to repair and is stronger like Awlgrip and not soft like Awlcraft 2000.

The inventor of Awlgrip sold the company, waited for non compete to expire and then created Alexseal.

Another bit of advise, do not go with a dark colored hull. You will regret looking at all of the water spots on it.........

Mine is stars and stripes blue and do not see spots for the most part.

Thanks Johnathan. Definitely a light color. I have been doing a lot of research and am off of the Awlgrip for exact reasons mentioned. I know some of the larger yacht companies have switched from Awlgrip to Awlcraft because they were getting too many complaints about lack of any kind of repair. I will research Awlcraft vs. Alexseal. One thing I already learned is it has to be recent data as their formulas continue to change mostly because of regulations so what once was the best could now fall behind. I did see your boat this summer when I was at your marina and thought it looked great. If you have any pics, can you email me so I can take a look at your color? I saw it on the chip but hard to draw any conclusions. hrenella at gmail.com.

I used Awlcraft2000 on my topside. Definitely a much softer paint. I was concerned about the fenders scratching the Awlcraft so Alexseal it was. Held up great 2 seasons now, no marks at all from my polar fleece covered fenders.
