Hull Pinstripe??

I have a 1989 Cheetah Ski boat and the only think that is not is showroom condition is the pinstripe around the top of the hull. My question....how hard is it to remove the old pinstripe (what is left of it) and apply a new one? I have never applied a pinstripe so just wanted to find out how tough this would be to do myself. Oh, the pinstripe is only 1/4" thick. Thanks!

Not hard at all. Get youself a heat gun or a hair dryer. It'll peel right off. Don't use a razor blade or scraper, it'll gouge the underlying gelcoat. You should be able to see where the old stripe was, to use as a guide, because the gelcoat underneath will be pristine. If not, use a wax pencil to trace the old stripe before you peel it off. A light rub with googone or acetone will clean up any of the old adhesive. 1/4 inch stripe is easy to apply. Stretch it pretty tight to get it straight and lay it down. If you make a mistake it should pick back up if you do it right away. Takes a little practice to get it straight.
 
Good advice from Rick. I added a stripe to my boat last week. Just make sure the hull is cleaned and prepped before you start. I used a pencil line as a guide and it came out pretty good. Take your time and I am sure you will get great results.

When you say "cleaned and prepped," what did you use? Like you, I will be applying the stripe to fiberglass. Is there anything I can pick up at the local sports shop or will I have to order something? Thanks for all the help guys!
 
Googone or acetone. Test a small patch in an inconspicious place first to make sure.
 
Thanks Rick! Now, my last question I promise haha. Any website you would recommend for the pinstripe? I have found a couple places that sell what I need but I wanted to see who you guys used. Thanks again.

The boat never had a stripe before, so I cleaned, compounded, and cleaned again before rubbing a little acetone over the area where the stripe would be applied. After the stripe was on, I added a couple of coats of wax.

use a decal eraser it work the fastest and will not harm the gelcoat
