Just in case, what preperation advice can anyone offer? Keep the boat in and add lines? or haul out and strap down? The marina I'm in uses a floating dock arrangement.

The BoatUS website offers some advice.

Better yet I hope Earl stays away and we have yet another awesome weekend.

A floating dock is awesome. Double up ur lines and try not to use the same cleats or rings on the dock.

If u can haul the boat. HEll i would. ( if we know its going to be close )

It looks like by Thursday we will know whats gonna be by us.
If we are getting any very high winds and a surge, then haul is the response and insurance will pay that.
If not, then I will see what it will be. May just ride it out on the boat at the marina.

Please if you have anything on your dock, remove it or tie it down!
I don't need your gas grill in my cockpit!

Wise words on all the dock paraphenallia. Even dock boxes with a few screws should probably get moved to a more secure location. We've had all sorts of stuff drift by on the Rondout Creek up in Kingston and all it did was flood up here.
BoatUS just sent me email about the storm:

As Hurricane Earl strengthens in the Caribbean, forecasters predict it could impact the Northeastern United States from North Carolina to Massachusetts in the next few days. Keep in mind that your boat doesn't have to be in the direct path of the storm to incur major damage. As a precaution, we encourage all policyholders to be prepared to take prompt action.

Open boats stored in the water and those with clogged scuppers can be sunk by significant rainfall. If your boat is on a lift, removing it from the lift and securing it ashore is the best way to ensure you don't lose time on the water, or incur out-of-pocket expense from a storm-related claim. Or if your boat is stored in a slip, it's a good idea to add extra lines, chafe protection and remove all canvas and/or sails.

Can't get to your boat? Your BoatUS Policy includes Hurricane Haul-Out coverage* to help with the expense of having a professional do the preparation and/or hauling (reimbursing you for 50% of the cost, up to $1,000 should a storm warning be posted for your area).

This weekend I tried unsuccesfully to fish one of those green all plastic chairs out of the bay. Floating just below the surface. Gotta imagine that can do some damage if caught just right on a prop. I contemplated call the coast guard. it was floating just off shore by the rocks behind my dock and I had no way to reach it.

I went to the Brightwaters Beverage Distributer last night and they were out of gallon jugs of water. Getting more in today. I asked if they ran out because of the storm. The guy seemed not to get what I meant. This may not be a direct hit, but I have a feeling that it won't be a complete non event.

Yeah, right...

Ok.. ok.. so I settled for 5 cases of beer and 6 12 packs of Mikes Hards mixed flavor packs.

If the hurricane spins counter clockwise and it stays east of montauk then the wind will be out of the Northeast. Not southwest. Right?

Can u imagine Champlins on Block with 4 or 5 boats rafted with hurricane force winds?

I feel bad for people who had labor day plans to go there.

Boat pulled into AYC from Rhode island today. Guy came here for refuge. Decided was better off here than there. Hope he is right!

I heard on the news that the authorities will be making a decision within 24 hours about ordering an evacuation of Fire Island. I wonder if that will be voluntary or mandatory?

Got a email from FOWH. Ferry service won't run Friday and most things in marina will be closed but marina will remain open.

Dave,

Pat and I were there several years ago this week during tropical storm ernesto. Boats on the outside slips at Champlins were pounded. Luckily it was not that crowded due to the bad weather. Boats on the moorings were being tossed all over the place.

I was tucked in close to the main dock. Boats farther out were getting pounded by 3 ft waves broadside. Big boats near the gas dock were tied to the middle of the slips because there were pounding the dock. It was ugly.

If I remember to look for pics tonight I will post em up.

This will probably be worse. Winds out there should be pretty bad. Plus it seems most people are not cancelling plans.

Adam, I think, but I'm not sure that they can't force you to leave. What the police do is go door to door and advise you to leave and if you refuse they ask for the names of your next of kin. You're not working friday are you?
