On my Carver 30'aftcabin the helm steering station is leaking and is in need of repair, it is a hynautic H 50 system
I will attack this next weekend. Are there any special instructions that I should know b4 I start. I know I will send the unit to be repaired I will not attempt myself.

PJ,
I have a 1982 3007 Aft Cabin and my upper helm started leaking too. I ordered a seal kit, took the helm pump home to my work bench and repaired it in about 20 minutes. I made notes and took digital photos as I went along to be sure I could put it back together correctly. The only issue is to be sure and align the timing marks back correctly, and don't lose any of the ball bearings.
I also ordered new hose 'O' rings and fittings and replaced at this time. It took longer to bleed the system after placing the unit back on the boat than to replace the seal.
There is excellent info on the repair and bleeding procedure just Google Hynautic steering.
I think it cost me about $50 for the parts and if I sent it in they wanted about $100 for labor.

Thanks I am still trying to get the steering wheel off. I forgot the wheel puller at the house!! no way to do it without the puller. I have the instruction on bleeding the system in the carver manual. I am going down to the boat next weekend to get the unit. I will make the call then if I attempt the repair myself.
Did you run the pressure up to 35 PSI? I had always run mine at 14 PSI but the manual recomends 35??

PJ,
To purge the system after repair, I did put about 35 to 40PSI into the system. But I run it at about 25PSI. Southern Charm has a web site with exploded views of the H50 and other helm units. My reservoir is the Reservalve, it has the relief valve built-in.
My wheel came off with little effort, but I had a very hard time removing the H50 pump from the dash. I don't think it had been removed since factory built (25 years ago)and it had just about formed a permanent bond with the cutout. I did not want to, but I had to persuade it with a rubber hammer.
Good luck on the project!

The steering wheel came off with major effort, but got it I failed to mark the orentation of the unit does it matter what side is on top? Hope that is clear? I did mark the port and starbord lines (2 starboard). Now lets see what the repair will be for this unit. Wish I could get a new boat with no issues!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all of your help we are now back running with complete control. Bleading the system was not hard at all just to time to turn the wheel 120 times.

Thanks again

That's great news PJ. My next project is replacing all exhaust manifolds and risers. I bought Osco's and gave them several coats of red high heat paint. Last time I replaced an exhaust manifold I had two of the bolts break off and what should have taken a couple of hours turned into about six. Had to try to get the broken bolts out while hanging upside down. They came out with no thread damage.
Hope you have good weather to enjoy the upper helm.
