Hydraulic Steering

Hello all,

When turning the wheel is it normal to have a little play before the engine turns? If not any suggestions.

Assuming a single mid range outboard with a typical hydraulic install....

Look at the area where the hydraulic ram connects to the outboard while having someone slowly turn the wheel right then left than back again.
You may be able to see play in the linkage (fix it) or at the mounting point of the ram to the outboard. You can adjust out some of this slop in many cases where there is a short 'rubber cushion' but do not add any pre-load to the outboard linkage there.

probably a small seal leak.

Add fluid...takes 5 mins

if it comes back then you have a bad seal.
