We rented a small cottage on the water last weekend just south of Bethel Island, I guess on Piper Slough. Below the docks the bottom was covered with hydrilla but I assumed in the middle of the river where it was deeper there would be no weed growth. I took a small boat across the river and was shocked to see the entire bottom was covered in that stuff. Maybe that is a very shallow slough or maybe it's something worse, in any event the fishing was poor and snags ruled the day. Anyone know that particular stretch ow water.

That really isn't surprising. We had an unusually warm dry winter which would encourage the growth of that stuff. And right now is the worst time of year for it to flourish. It can also make Danforth-type anchors impossible to take a bite! Pray for a very cold, wet winter and next year it will be greatly improved!
Boats & Waterways has a treatment to minimize that stuff, but who knows if Parks and Rec will allow them the funds to use it. I see tons of hyacinth when there are pictures of Delta waters on TV, such as around the Stockton Marina, so it is pretty obvious they didn't do any hyacinth control spraying this year.
sigh........

They were able to get permits and did quite a bit of spraying for the hyacinth this year and were able to start early in the year. It was much better at Village West and in the parts of the Delta I frequent, but it has gotten bad at the downtown marina over the last few weeks. Maybe the effects of not doing enough spraying the last two years when there were permit problems?

It is definitely something which has to be kept on top of----sort of like the dishes LOL
