Lately on weekends I have noticed the lake I boat on, Lake Lanier, a large lake really torn up with wakes. Lot of energy in the water to the point that even on calm wind days, there are sometimes white caps on the weekends. I also notice of late I see large wakes, with no boat in sight. Wakes with an enormous vortex of white water folding over. I have since discovered the source of all these phenomena. Wake boarding. These boats with their "wake tanks" are plowing through the water are creating bone jarring wakes that not only are a hazard, they are destroying shoreline per the Lake Association. I am not a fun killer, wake boarding looks cool, but the tanks, fins, and foils have gotten out of hand.

Well, a boater is legally responsible for the wake created, so document some damage and follow through...

Either personally, civilly, or send documentation to a civil/criminal authority for legal action.

OR

Get a surfboard... :D

Same here on our lake. They are crushing my boat on my dock every weekend. The lake has whitecaps for no reason. It’s so bad you can’t even tell whose boat is coming from. To top it off, this type of boater seems to be totally clueless to the impact they have on others.

wake surfing is worse than wake boarding
but I've seen larger boats plowing through the water just under planing speed throw up big waves too

The Calif Delta is the perfect place for skiing, wake boarding, and wake surfing. The waves hit the sides of the sloughs and die. Essentially boats go single file down the slough

Every lake has the same problems or they have speed limits. Idiots ruined it for everyone.

you can be in the middle of the lake wakeboarding and those waves will make it to shore

One of our local lakes has quite a few wake surfers on it. On a busy day they turn the lake into a maelstrom of random wakes and rough water. And those wakes can really travel...

Loud music on a quiet day too!

Same think on Lake Norman - the number of wake boats has exploded the last couple of years. Don't know what they will come up with, but the marine commission is having discussions about what to do. I am all for having fun on the water, not a wake boarder, but avid skier in the day - but the wakes these things throw are tremendous. LKN is really no fun a busy weekend, but it does take me back a few years when I see a boat load of kids out having a good time -- there are worse things they could be doing.

In the Delta, the issue isn't wakes for skiing. Its the much slower speed of wakeboarding that clogs up the sloughs. However, if you are on the water by 8am, you can get several sets of skiing in before the wakeboarders show up at 10am plus

Same issue on Lake Powell. WE have stopped going during the summer when the lake is crowded. It never fails we will find a nice quiet cove to spend the night, get the grill out for some happy hour treats and just as we settle in here comes a friggen wake boat that proceeds to turn laps right behind our cruiser (with stereo blaring) for hours. I try to get their attention but it never works.

I'm typically not the revenge type of guy but once I was soo pissed off at a group that the next day when we pulled anchor to head home I purposely cruised by their camp site and made 3-4 passed with the bow trimmed up and throwing the largest wake I could create.... I really doubt I got my point across but it made me feel better...
