While shallow, a big wake lifted my 19' I/O boat allowing it to slam into the bottom. The sterndrive didn't break, but the fiberglass around the transom was damaged, allowing water to flood in.
When out of the water, it doesn't look that bad, just some 1" cracks and slight bulge, but it almost sank and the 6 gpm bilge couldn't outrun it. I'd say I had 300 gallons of water onboard. Thankfully, a stranger helped me get it back to the ramp and onto the trailer.
I have insurance and the adjuster came yesterday. He's having trouble getting finding a shop willing to do inboard and/or work any time soon - everyone is busy.
I'm mechanically handy so I'd be willing to remove the sterndrive. I'd even be willing to do the repair(for example, I would do the disassembly, and reassembly but outsource the fiberglass and re-inforcing work).
Is this done? I figure if I took that responsibility, they would just write me a check and I'd better never come back for another claim for the structure.
Anybody got any experience on this? Any advice?
Thanks!
