My 2000 technology Raymarine (I think C70) B&W radar/GPS lost the GPS function. I though about fixing it, but decided to keep as a radar unit (not used much at all) and get a new GPS. I purchased the Garmin 540S unit. This is a nice unit! I got the Sonar option as this is the 'S' model.

I plan on installing the sonar unit as a through hull vs mounting it on the transom. The Garman tech manual said this could offer better resolution and no holes.

Anyone else installed this unit?

Just an FYI but the NAV rules require that if you have RADAR on your boat it must be operational, in good working order and most importantly, in use when underway.

Personally, I find that using it in good conditions helps me understand it better when I need it most.

Can't help with the Garmin.

REALLY? Is that why I see radar arrays going 'round on sunny days in & out of the harbor? I just thought they were playing, or, worse yet, flaunting their toys. :)

I too did not know that. Like sugilbert, I thought these guys running radar on the Delta in sunny conditions were just showing off. Thanks for the input Rommer. Mine is a closed dome and is fully functional. The GPS part of the unit went bad. I still do not plan on running radar 95% of my boating. It is a handy item on the CA Delta only in fog or night conditions.

for a commercial captain it is a liability issue. if the boat were to be involved in an accident, someone will eventually ask if all of the safety equipment available to the skipper was operational at the time of the accident. if the answer is no, because the radar was turned off, there would be a potential liability claim against the captain for failing to use safety equipment that could have prevented the accident. sounds silly, but i'm sure it would water in a trial.

I'm sure you are aware but reading a RADAR display is part science and part black magic. Thats the main reason I use it during good conditions, helps me learn the difference between a ghost image and a real one. (Aside from being required to use it)

I'm one of those that feel you can never have too much info when it comes to safety.

Then, obviously, you have Chapman's on your helm. ;-)

With the 2960, I travel the water rb2@gr5t 30mph. this si waaaaaaaaaay faster than my radar could keep up with and on a good day, the display is usless wtih the sun out. So, my radar will be turned on on bad visability days when I'm traveling at 5 to 7 mph. But do find it interesting the input I get with the regal owner group - opps strike that, boatered.com page. Just like old times.

Not at the helm but in the salon!
