Ideal type of line for towing

I intned to v=carry a line for towing, if I or someone else near me needs a tow. The obvious solution would be to use an anchor rode - I carry 300' of 1/2" three-strand nylon for a rode. Is this what I should be towing/towed with, or is there a type of line made expressly for towong? I guess I'm worried aboiut all the stretch in 3-strand nylon, and what it might do if it broke and came at either boat.
If I'm under tow it I'm assuming I'd want to take the pull where the towing winch attaches?

If I'm towing I'd assume the thing to do is to build a longish bridle from the two stern corner cleats and pull from that??

Any insight into the safest way to do this would be useful.

And by the way, Is it reasonable to offer to tow someone in if they are in need? From a liability point of view, that is.
 
Vee, there is no difference in liability no matter who uses what line. If you take the line from a disabled boat and proceed to injure someone on that boat by jerking the towed boat, towing too fast, towing improperly or for any one of a number reasons, you are potentially liable. I've had more than one insurance policy that specifically stated that I would not be covered if I towed another vessel. And three strand nylon is the worst possible line. The best line is the one on the Sea Tow or Boat US vessel. Frankly, if you have to ask the question, you don't have enough experience to be towing anyone.
 
For those who may be new to this board, I spent eight years with Sea Tow and have towed hundreds of boats, including overnight tows from the Bahamas. I've also had a stainless steel tow hook fail and come whipping back, missing my head by about two feet. You'll notice that all boats engaged in recreational towing have a tow post as close to the center of the vessel as possible. This allows the towing vessel to maneuver while under tow. Most also have a steel grate behind the helm to protect the operator. The operator is a licensed captain with training and experience. Even then, there's not a year that goes by that one or more commercial tow boats are lost, usually tripped.

Towing is inherently dangerous. As I mentioned above, my last insurance policy specifically prohibited towing. I'd suggest that you read yours or call your agent. This forum is about safe boating. I can't recommend that anyone without the proper equipment, training and experience engage in towing, regardless of how small the vessel is.

I have, on many occasions, happened upon a disabled vessel. I will approach, determine if anyone needs medical attention, make sure the boat is stable and then offer to call a towing company or the CG. Most insurance policies will reimburse you for towing costs. The cost of a towing company membership is also fairly low. I'm certainly not suggesting that you just ignore your fellow boater. But you don't want to needlessly put yourself at risk either.

You'll notice that commercial tow boats have a special pole that is used to attach the tow line to the bow ring, as opposed to the cleats. The ring is much stronger than the cleats that, on many small boats, are simply screwed in with no backing plates. Then, of course, there's the issue of management. Tow a bow rider someday with 6 people on board. All six will want to sit in the bow. If sea conditions warrant, you need to get both boats in "step." If you have a vessel tied to your stern cleats, you have almost no maneuverability. Plus you need to be able to determine how much line you need - from 30' to 300'.

The typical tow is like a flight. The beginning and the end are the critical points with usually not much happening in between. However, it only takes a second for things to start going south. Polyester line is just as bad as 3 strand nylon, for just the opposite reason. Sea Tow, for example, uses a custom blend of synthetic line that has some elasticity, high strength and also floats to keep the line out of the props. The ability of a tow line to absorb shock is very important - it keeps the hardware in place. Tugs towing large vessels offshore use steel cable with sufficient weight to create a catenary that will absorb shock.

For those of you on Lake WakiWaki, I don't know what to tell you - other than, again, check your insurance policy. No one wants to leave a family stuck in the middle of the lake. But josko has pleny of commercial providers in and around Woods Hole.
 
Braided Dacron is a terrible choice for a tow line because it has virtually no stretch. It's common use is for halyards, just for that reason.
 
josko, the problem you've got is that you can't tow more than 6 or 7 knots for a 35' vessel. The CG has published towing speeds that, if exceeded, could put you in an indefensible position should there be an accident. 100 miles offshore means a 16 or so hour tow. Fuel is probably the primary consideration for a tow of that length. Personally, and this is not a recommendation, I'd start towing the guy in with at least 300' of 5/8" or better line with assurances that some commericial tower was on his way out to meet me and take over the tow. However, there is always the risk of a tow of that length to be called a salvage. The difference is only in the degree of peril. Anyone 100 miles offshore and disabled is in a fair amount of peril.
 
Yes, you can tell that the catalog was written by a marketing guy and not a tow boat captain. You'd have to ask Sea Tow that question. I can't speak for them any longer. However, any tow boat that carries enough fuel for a tow like that is going to be twin diesels with a cruise of probably 23 knots or so. You are looking at four hours or more just to get out there. Then another 16 hours to get back. No captain can work 20 hours straight so you need two people on board. That, in my opinion, is not in the rhelm of recreational towing. Then, of course, is the issue of communications. One of the requirements in the CG SAR policy, and this is how Sea Tow can opt out of the deal, is that the MARB'd tow boat be in radio communication with the disabled vessel. Obviously, no tow boat can communicate 90 miles offshore with a VHF. I doubt if you could even reach the CG at that distance. Realistically, anyone going that far off shore had better have well maintained twins.
