I was thinking of buying a GPS this year and have been researching the Standard Horizon CPF190I. Its 5" with built-in GPS antenna. At some point I will connect it to a VHF when my current older one gives out.

I have seen some by Lowrance and Garmin that might fit the bill.

24' boat, boating mostly in the rivers and lakes.

They are all good. I have an older SH that I like a lot. The screen is much brighter than a newer Garmin, however the Garmin refresh rate is superior. I do NOT like the C-Map system. It is not user friendly and crashes my computer ad nauseous. I believe I am going to look at the Lowrance as a comparison unit to have for a couple of years as I am moving to coastal waters and desire newer equipment.

Lowrance's parent company is Simrad. I have the NSS7 and love it. Very quick refresh-far superior to Garmin and has touch screen as well as knob control. The only thing I still have to get use to is the fishfinder is not as descriptive as the old Humminbird dedicated fish/depth finder that I had. I was spoiled with the Humminbird with the icons of fish of different sizes showing on the display. Simrad's display is more old-school display with arcs even when set on fish icons-does not differentiate sizes of fish. This is only my second season using the Simrad and at my age, the learning curve is much slower.

run away from Raymarine.

I really wish I had !
